I have to agree with Thomas P. Jesus was probably bi-lingual Himself--Aramaic with his family, friends, etc. and Greek with his non-Jewish customers (he was a carpenter until he was 30 after all). The Romans generally used Greek and not Latin to communicate in this part of the world as did most non-Jewish nations.

Gotta correct some errors in other answers: Jesus didn't speak Hebrew. If he did at all it was as a third language behind Aramaic and Greek. The common Jew did not speak a word of Hebrew in the first century. He spoke Aramaic. Hebrew went extinct as a language in the 6th century BCE. Jews who had time on their hands (the rabbis, Pharisees, and Saduccees) learned to read and write Hebrew, but the carpenters who had to work for a living didn't have the time to learn both Greek (which made them money because they could sell to the coastal merchants, the Roman soldiers passing through, and various other non-Jewish customers) and Hebrew (which was pretty worthless for business in those days).

Why isn't Jesus allowed to select a language from the Eastern hemisphere?

I don't think Jesus would choose to participate in the selection on the grounds that it's not his job. Also because he probably wouldn't give too much of a crap, because he only spoke Aramaic or Hebrew or whatever, so English, Spanish, French-probably all the same to him.

Jesus wouldn't select an official language at all.
