Do you ever feel like people who have never had a migraine don't believe you? Like they think migraines are nothing more than a bad headache?

I've been getting migraines for a few years now, I'm on a prescription, but as you well know, it doesn't always work. And I have had to call in to work or leave early due to a bad migraine, and sometimes I feel guilty because I feel like my fellow coworkers who don't know what it's like think it's not that big of a deal. Am I the only one who faces this issue?

More than 29.5 million Americans suffer from migraine, with women being affected three times more often than men. More than 10 million Americans suffer chronic headaches (15 or more episodes per month). There is more time lost from work/school in the US from migraine than any other single medical condition. You are not alone.

Migraine, along with many other primarily neurologic conditions have no outward physical manifestation, but produce dibilitating results. It is much easier to foster support for a person who has an orthopedic appliance or other medical aid or deformity which announces their condition, than for a person, who is generally quiet and withdrawn, due to recurrent pain.

You are not alone. In addition to the other 30 million people with this condition in the US alone, there are millions of others throughout the world.

I have had severe migraines and have specialized in migraine management for that reason. There are methods for managing migraines, but there will always be breakthrough events.

My daughter has started experiencing migraines, and has missed a lot of school as we have not gotten her symptoms under control. When she asked one of her teachers if she could go to the school nurse, she was told she would be marked absent and would miss all the coursework. And lately, as she has had frequent medical appointments, whenever they come to the school room to get a student for an appointment, the other students taunt her and say, "I bet it is for XXXX." She has been quitre upset, which I'm sure you understand makes the headaches worse.

We understand.

I wish you the best!

Of course you're not the only one with migraines. I'm lucky in that mine don't hurt. I just have amazing light shows with zig-zag arcs of bright lights playing games on my eyeballs. Shutting my eyes just makes them brighter. It's so nice when they leave! But some people have totally disabilitating migraines and they can shut you down for days sometimes. Talk to your doctor about the possibility of something that will be more effective.
