I think there are several gods but only one God worthy of worship - He's the one that made us all! The only reason they're not talked about in the Bible is because they're unworthy, and can and will do HORRIBLE things! My God doesn't do anything like they do...He gave us free will and he abides by His own rule - Satan will convince people to do awful things and the only thing God can do to stop those people is nudge him to choose those strong enough to handle it as his victims so long as his choosing was going to be random. Let me know what you think!! I've never really shared this idea with anyone yet.

I think of a god as a powerful being on a higher level of existence (not visible unless they decide to be).

The Bible said, "You shall have no other gods before Me." Exodus 20:3

That tells me that He's the big guy and there are other little guys that He won't stand by and watch us worship. Later on it even talks about other gods and how God beat 'em!

Great answers everyone!! Thank you so much!

No, I really haven't studied other religions like my husband has, but that wasn't the point - I just wanted to hear what everyone thought of my idea and I got some great answers.

I never really thought that some of the weaker gods might not be all bad - that's definately food for thought!

My faith has been shaken, but I've had so much proof of His existance in my life I will never actually abandon my God. Thank you everyone!!

OK. First off you’re on the right track. However, other gods are mentioned in the bible, Baal comes to mind, as a bad guy mind you. But Yhwy didn't punish Ba'al, he punished the Hebrew who were worshiping him and the priest that led them astray. Even the Commandment "you shall have NO OTHER God before me" would not be necessary if God did not recognize the existence of others. Yes, you and I believe that only God should be first, just like the commandment. But to call all the other "gods" unworthy does not show the proper respect for our God. If like you said GOD created them, then they deserve the same respect as all His creatures He created. Now, there are several of these gods that have thrown their "hats" in with the adversary historically, Set being one of them. If you would like a place to share these ideas with likeminded people find a group called Scythe_and_Sword. But be ready it will challenge you. And no, it has not been up long, but I am trying to get more post up. Oh and BTW ever hear of the flood, our God is bloody.

If I understood your description correctly, you're defining lower-G "god" as any "supernatural being" - angels, demons, etc.
You are defining capital-G "God" as essentially the Jewish/Christian/Moslem God.

That's sort of like reverse engineering what Christianity did - as they converted different nations, they redefined the gods these people believed in as demons or angels - depending on the politics and other details involved.
Jews did something a bit different - they saw the "gods" of other nations around them as misremembered attempts to worship some aspect of "God".

You may also be interested in the "Sandman" comics -
there Neil Gaiman also creates a pantheon of godly beings but there is an awareness of something beyond this which seems to be the trancendent "Jewish" God.

You're lack of research into other religions and mythologies is just.... depressing. Your God doesn't do and hasn't done horrible things? Ordering entire cities and nations destroyed so the Jewish tribes could steal the land and no other reason isn't HORRIBLE? Letting Abram pimp out his wife and rewarding him for it isn't horrible? Putting his son (who is himself) go through an extremely painful death isn't horrible? Condemning millions to eternal torment if they don't worship like he likes isn't horrible.

Sorry - I know you mean well but you really need to learn some history before condemning other religions, people and gods.

My deities didn't do any of those things and don't condemn you to eternal torment if you don't worship them. Satan hasn't convinced me of anything - I asked for your god for 15 years, he didn't answer. I found the deities that I belonged with.

Added: The bible talks about many gods, the Jewish one claimed to be the "correct" one - not the only one. He claimed to be the "only one" for the Jewish tribes, not the only one in existence.

I actually think that for the sake of peace, there is only one God. A God who teaches us to do good, and stray from evil, which is pretty much what all religions would have in common. Thing is, he's shown himself to us in different ways to certain people so that they will be able to understand better.(you know like, Alah, the Hindu gods, Buddah)

But as human beings, each one of us has exadurated the real meaning of believing in our religions, which is to be spiritually guided to live better lives.

Your idea is your opinion. Its how you interpret your understanding of Gods and religions. If anything, my bit of constructive critisizm (or just some food for thought) for you would be, how can you exactly justify what you're saying? (AKA "proof")

Nobody can say that they're really right or wrong, but applying some simple logic tends to check if your statement may hold true. Mine for example, all you really need to do is compare and contrast certain religions and it makes my statement seem pretty reasonable.

Thinking in terms of gods is why the first commandment was created. Personally, I thought the idea of many gods died out with primative civilizations. The dictionary definition of a monotheistic God should be the only one accepted in this day and age. As to whether He even exists might be a matter of debate, but to substitute it for many gods seems to be more in the category of stupidity (primative minds) now days.

I believe there is only One God. There is no other God besides Jesus/God.

Besides, some people worship the God of compassion, sun, rain, moon, love, etc. Basically, they are worshiping what God has given them but they turn it around and make it a GOD.

You sound like one of the very few consistent theists I've ever seen. I can at least respect it even if I can't identify with it.

Most theists are actually inconsistent atheists. They disbelieve in 99.99% of gods.

Gods are like us. As Above, So Below. (Hermes Trimagesterius) So, they are many, and varied, just like us. Some are craftsmen, others scholars, others mothers, others single risk takers. It's the only way it works for my mind.
