A Jehovah's Witness patient makes it clear that his religious beliefs preclude the transfusion of whole blood, plasma, platelets, red cells, and white cells. Soon after total knee arthroplasty, the surgeon orders the use of a Gish Orthoinfuser to collect blood from the surgical site. What alternate strategy might a nurse suggest?

It is standard procedure to re-infuse the patient's own blood which had been collected into the Gish's reservoir. Should the nurse re-infuse the blood of the Jehovah's Witness?

Patient A had a severe GI bleed which required emergency surgery to stop the bleed. His blood loss was so severe that he needed a blood transfusion. In his records he signed that he was a Jehovah's witness and cannot receive another persons blood based on purity beliefs in his religion. What do you do?
