Soon after total knee arthroplasty, the surgeon orders the use of a Gish Orthoinfuser to collect blood from the surgical site. What alternate strategy might a nurse suggest?

It is standard procedure to re-infuse the patient's own blood which had been collected into the Gish's reservoir. Should the nurse re-infuse the blood of the Jehovah's Witness?

Patient A had a severe GI bleed which required emergency surgery to stop the bleed. His blood loss was so severe that he needed a blood transfusion. In his records he signed that he was a Jehovah's witness and cannot receive another persons blood based on purity beliefs in his religion. What do you do?
