actually, i thought exclusivity of salvation was original to christianity, and the whole point of creating it. the emperor demanded an offering to himself as a god, so the galileans created a god that would send you to hell for it.

edit: philosophyangel, i think the point of these questions is that certain christians claim to hold a radically new system of belief that renders all other religions obsolete. the idea is to educate people that christianity really isn't any different than anything that preceded it.

Because I have just been partaking of a few drops of that Communion wine stuff , which is called vodka by most liqueur stores, I just cant think of any thing new in the new testament .
I think it was that Roman feller Constantine , that decided that Christianity was to be the in thing!
He was a very clever guy, he had to persuade a lot of these pagan folk to agree with him , so the best way to go about that was to incorporate a lot of their fairy tales into one big volume and call it the new testament.
This was made up of various books or stories, like the testaments according to Matthew-Mark-Luke -John!
All we do know for a fact is that these 'testaments' were for sure not penned by those authors!
This Constantine certainly knew how to control folk, which is what religion is all about.
His bright idea of course would be run from Rome, that would be the head of the group which would be based around the world.
It started to break up , I dread to try and think how many different branches there are now of this 'unified' band.
It broke up for very good reasons??
One example I like is that the pope didnt want any such thing as divorce, but we had a king in the uk, he wanted one of these divorce things, he had run out of reasons to chop his wivies heads off.
Vegas wasnt about at the time so he went through the formalities of asking the pope, the pope basically said "Get stuffed your worship full"!!
Our king didnt go much on this reply and had a little fit, he announced he would take over the church of England, he would be the head, he would appoint all sorts of new 'holy' men to lead his flock! In the meantime divorce would be legal.
So all ends well, it all makes sense doesnt it???????
Now look what youve done! My ice has melted my glass is empty I cant remember drinking that vodka, it must have evaporated while I was knocking this together, this situation is now far more important than your Christianity thingy.

I am not a Christian apologist but I still find it annoying (and also a display of ignorance) when non-Christians rant about what Christianity stole for other religions. The slightest amount of reseach by mere typing of a few words (such as Gnosticism, Hermeticm, Neoplationism, Mithracism, etc) in a Google search engine will allow a person to observe that certain variations of mystical, philosophical, and religious ideas arose in tandem at a certain point in history (about the third century BCE to the third century CE) and evolved into unique structures that none-the-less arose from common and interpenetrating origins. In time, because of politicalization and numerous other factors, a certain form became the dominant and standard motif. It continued to evolve and aculturate in an imperialistic way over time, and we've been living with that for several centuries but all things change , so not to get too cranky about it. It is not about "stealing"; it is about the evolution of culture. Check back in another 500 years. Someone will be bemoaning the current zeitgeist and talking about the good old Golden Age of the Christian era that lasted for a mere millenium (as did the predominence of Buddhism in India from about 500 BCE to 500 or so CE, btw.).

Not much - why should there be? Jesus said " I come not to change the law, but to add to it", and the concept of "love thy neighbour as thyself" is not entirely unique to Christian philosophy. The new bit is the addition of "Thou Shalt" to those words, turning them from a philosophy into a command.

Not much...

But, if Judaism was the first religion to worship only one almighty God, then Christianity would be the first to worship the son of God. Also, Christianity was the first to veil women, which is a little-known fact.
