my 1996 jetta recently had a major leak from what seems to be a "cooler" on the oil filter going into the engine.

the seal was broken causing oil to spit out. the oil light was flashing before that, and even now that i replaced the seal (doesnt seem like exact original seal) i disconnected the electrical oil sensor and replaced it with a mechanical one.

the oil pressure when idling seems to vary from time to time, it can be up to 70psi or at less than 20psi sometimes. (when idling) the first day i day i test drove it, the car almost stalled.

what could be the problem? what is the regular oil pressure for a jetta?

im thinking it could either be because of the seal isnt proper size and causing pressure to escape, or maybe i didnt properly installed the hose going to the mechanical oil pressure gauge.

You are probably right on both counts. Modifying things sometimes can make it worse. If you didn't use a genuine VW seal, then you are asking for trouble. Go back and do things right. Also, sometimes the oil pressure relief valve that sits near your oil pump may be a little clogged. Remove your oil filler cap and look at the back of it. Does it look clean or is it coated with brown, or goo, or flaky particles that you can scratch with your fingernail?? Then the whole inside of the engine, including the pressure relief valve, will look like this. The answer here is to do an engine treatment that removes all these deposits, and brings your engine to show-room-new conditions. I would be happy to E-mail you the procedure I have found that works the best. In the mean time, replace that seal with a genuine VW part, it is well worth it!!!Good Luck!!!
