I know, I'm always one for a good joke.

Why did the dinosaur cross the road?
Chickens hadn't evolved yet.

But you know what's not funny (other than that joke)? Pedophile Rape. It doesn't matter how you spin it, it's just horrible. These are real crimes, with real victims who've really been raped. STOP CRACKING JOKES ABOUT THEM.

I'm all for exposing the story, and discussing the issue, but in the name of all that you may or my not find holy, stop discussing these tragedies (whose victims continue to suffer) in any way other than with the gravity they deserve. Do NOT, whatever your proclivities may be, use these horrible situations as a "got cha!" point against Catholics. That's just sick.

To avoid this being called a "rant", is there anyone who can think of a reason why cracking a "Catholic Priest-with-alter-boy" joke would ever be appropriate?

you know, I have talked about this before and even posted links about it... yes the Catholic church has been in the news for its priest sex scandals... but we weren't the only church with problems. It just seems like we are the only church that made national headlines....

but no joke about sex abuse is ever good....

The Salem Witch Trials were NOT conducted by the Catholic Church!!! That is one of the most incredulous statements I've ever read. And I ought to know, too 'cuz I'm from MA!! Catholicism was illegal in some of the colonies (including MA) until the 18th century (and in some places, the 19th). This latest is nothing more than a smear campaign aimed at the Holy Father. The focus of the press coverage surrounding this is all about the Pope, not about the victims and the actual perpetrators of the crimes.

I agree 100%!
It isnt soemthing to joke about! Its real life and the victims are real and have feelings!
I am catholic and have mainly protestant friends and they constantly think that it is funny to make jokes like these! I have pointed out on numerous occasions that it is not funny and people actually suffer!
Priests are an easy target because they take a vow of celibacy!
I thank you for your point and hope that people start to think of the victims and the influence these jokes have on peoples opinions of priests! !

I think it is inappropriate to make jokes but I also think the Catholic Church did a poor job of removing priests who violate children.

I am not against being reminded of what has happened in the Catholic Church, or any other denomination, but there should never be jokes on such serious issues.

I agree 100%. There is nothing funny about it, in any way from or fashion. I just wish the Catholics would stand together and DEMAND marital rights for their priest or LEAVE the church!!!! That would stop most, if not all, of it. Unfortunately, they have been taught that the Catholic Church is the only church that can assure you of your salvation, so they never will (as a collective whole that is, I am sure some individuals and families have realized that the Catholic Church cannot offer salvation any more than I can, it ONLY comes from God, through Christ.)

No other organization has been allowed to get away with this mass pedophilia and cover up. All their assests should be seized and divided up amongst the victims. The members of the catholic cult can still practice their religious cult and have services, but the cults property would be gone and they would have to rebuild.

I can see why it is not fair to joke about such things, but it needs to be brought up...as far as I am noticing, they are successfully sweeping this whole thing under the rug in a very calculated way, and trying to get the victims to shut up about it. I don't think it is fair either to completely forget about this issue...just because history tends to repeat itself....

I'm not going to stop going on about it. The parents and later the kids themselves refused to do anything about it because it was being done by their own priests. THEY DID NOTHING TO STOP IT FROM HAPPENING TO OTHERS. The parents were so wrapped up in their religious belief that they couldn't even do the ethical thing and protect their children from the pedophiles. No, I will not stop.

...to get to the other side. Sorry, but that's the answer to the only question you asked.

But I agree that child rape is not a joke. Can I still make fun of the fact that priests wear dresses?

Thank you. Your consideration is appreciated by at least one Catholic.

It's easy to attack the Church on this issue, and I believe that every bishop etc, that hid these crimes is as guilty as the priests who committed them.

However, the priesthood doesn't have a monopoly on pedophilia. There are Scout Masters, school teachers and preachers of every variety in this not-so-exclusive clan.

And no, jokes about pedophiles, rapists, and their victims can never be justified by compassionate people.
