Spots and zits are two different things. Your first inclination is the correct one, don't pick zits or they may scar your face. Dry them out by using an acne medication, or else you'll irritate your skin and cause more outbreaks on your complexion. Keep your face and hair clean and free of excess oils. Leave you hands off your face. You can often gently wash a whitehead off using a gentle cleanser and a soft washcloth. Try using an astringent (Witch Hazel or Biore') after you wash to tone your skin and keep it oil free.

In theory, any blemish on your skin (whether you pick it or leave it alone) has the potential to leave a scar. However, in most cases your chances of getting a scar by picking is far greater than if you leave it alone.
Popping a zit is somewhat similar to picking a scab; you're preventing your body from healing. By opening the skin, you make it prone to infection, which makes scarring more likely.
Online you'll find websites on how to "safely" pop a zit, but there really is no such thing. While you can make the "elevation" go down, in a few days it can become more red, or a scab might form.
What I do instead: I put a dab of this "emergency cream" with benzoyl peroxide on the pimple before I go to bed:

If your body doesn't take well to benzoyl peroxide (which can be drying) look for products that contain salicylic acid.
Best of luck!

Picking a pimple can cause infection and possibly leave a scar. It can also make the pimple look worse.
Benzoyl peroxide is wonderful for pimples. You can get it at any drugstore. Different manufacturers make it. Just put a little bit on the pimple in the morning and at night before you go to sleep on clean skin. You will see that in two days or so the pimple should disappear. Just don't touch it. You will infect the pimple. But, I know, people tend to touch pimples nervously because they want to see "how it's doing" lol.
If you have an acne problem that reallly bothers you, make an appointment with a dermatologist. She or he will be able to help you with medications, cleansers, etc. Take care.

A huge white headed spot isn't very attractive looking on the end of your nose, that is why people pop/squeeze them. If you leave it and let mother nature takes its course, they won't scar and they just go away by themselves in a few days.
If you pick at acne then you can get acne scars and if you pick at a spot which scaps, and you continue picking at it, it will eventually form in to a scar.
Picking spots is good therapy :)

pop the zits, out pops the blood and pus inside and you can do permanent scarring from this. better to just treat the acne problem and leave the zits alone til they fade away. do not burst them open, as you will be scarred forever. get good meds for your face if you suffer from acne. wash and keep your face clean and remove all makeup daily, if you wear any.
