I saw this on TV. The penalty was normally 30 day impound, but when the child (about 8 years old) sassed the officer, the father sold the bike and gave the kid a whipping. I don't think the father should have sold it.

To those who agree with selling it: Shouldn't he ever get another one if his behavior gets better?

Selling it made no sense. The spanking made perfect sense.

Selling the kids Bike was a pretty mean punishment,I do understand that Sassing a officer or disrespecting an Adult should not go on without some kind of discipline,Like a get sturdy talk or his video games taken away,They Dad could have taken the bike away for a few days or a week to help him understand what he did wrong.

Sounds like an old Andy Griffith episode. I think it was the right idea. The kid was out of control, and needed to be brought down to earth. The loss of the bike was for breaking the bike rules, and the whipping was for the sassing. I really don't see a problem here.

Any 8 year old that "sasses" an officer is headed down the wrong path. His father did the right thing. Now that kid will always remember that disrespecting the law in intolerable.

If he does get another one, it should be with money that he earned on his own...

The father did what he thought was suitable. If my kid broke the law and was sassing an officer, I'd sell the bike too. I wouldn't whip, but he'd be grounded for a long, long time.

I would rather he sell the playstation then the bike. Or the TV, or the cellphone, Ipod, etc.

The bike did not teach him to sass the officer, something else did and that is what needed to go....

Yes. If the kid is not going to use it properly, he shouldn't have it to use. This is the only sort of thing kids understand. A single Mom pal of mine had a problem with her 12 year old once. He didn't like being grounded for having skipped school. So, he took her favorite rings, and ear rings, and flushed them down the toilet. She waited until he went to school, again, and then threw his favorite video games in the trash dumpster...on collection day. The punk never again touched her belongings.

It was the Father's decision and I will not undermine his authority in the situation cause. Probably with some good behavior the son will get a bicycle again.

In a manner of speaking-yes.There are things I will never let my kids do ever while living in my house. If they did it anyway. I would then prevent them from doing it again.By taking something from them-permanently.I would reserve it predominantly for things to do w/ their safety. But rules are rules.God is a God of love and justice. Its called-balance.We should have that if we are going to be good parents.

In that position I might TELL the kid I'd sold the bike, as a "wake up call" but IF he behaved for a good while, it might be "found" again, other wise gotta buy another new one later

But sure, take the kids bike if he was caught breaking rules and insulted a police officer.

I think its tough love and a good idea. Recently there was a man who bought his son guitar hero III for a Christmas gift, he caught his son smoking pot and sold it. The $90 game sold on ebay for over $9,000. I think if a kid does something wrong they should be punished according to the bad behavior.
