No. Intersections are the most dangerous parts of driving. It's better to stay in your lane while approaching and moving through an intersection so other drivers don't have the guess what you are doing. What if someone wants to turn right from the cross traffic direction and seeing you in your left lane decides to go for it. After he looks away you inter the intersection and changes lanes to your right. Now this person has just pulled out in front of you. That person assumed you were going to stay in the left lane and the right lane would be open for him to use.

No it isn't legal...that's why there is a solid white line leading up to the intersection and just past it when the lane picks up again on the other side of the intersection...folks just break the law all the time.

The majority of states that I'm familiar with have an ordinance on the books which states you stay in your lane through out the intersection. If you need to change lanes, that shall be done before of after entering the intersection.

My driver's ed teacher always told me NEVER change lanes in the middle of the intersection. I'm sure that it is considered illegal lane usage & you could be ticket for it or held liable if there's an accident.

Where I live (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) it is illegal to change lanes in the middle of the intersection.

But even if it was legal, it's very unwise.

It depends on your state...in mine it is, but it is not advisable. You will need to get a copy of your states driver's manual from the DVS (driver&vehicle Services department)...or perhaps your DMV will have it.
You will wish to look under "lane changing".
Or you can call either a local office of AAA or any driving school in your area, they should be able to tell you.
