The biggest threat historically is always "within" but is often exploited from "without". That is to say the Roman Empire fell due to internal strife and civil wars that weakened it and left it unable to withstand or subdue groups that at earlier points in its history would have been no problem for it.

To that end America has the same weaknesses. An unwillingness to fight to preserve our place in the world means that it will certainly diminish over time. Given that we are "the great Satan" to Iran and have people as close as Chavez in Venezuela talking about us badly such a diminished position will almost certainly lead to our eventual downfall. These people won't forget their extreme distaste for us simply because we aren't bothering them any longer. One only has to look at the near fascist policies occurring in Putin's Russia to see that even old cold war foes aren't really down for the count.

Our country did well by going after Afghanistan and even Iraq (even without WMD) but unfortunately the current President, being a moron, couldn't sell the latter properly (and worse yet lied about the reasons for it) and THEN couldn't execute the strategy properly.

That is to say the wars send the message we ARE willing to fight and bleed when attacked. His prosecution of them however mean that in the end we'll likely leave Iraq in a state of chaos and the other side will think we are not willing to fight long haul for such things. This will embolden them.
