Why don't you want to tell him? Are you shy or something? I mean, I think some guys find confidence and a lady being upfront about what she wants attractive. There is no way of letting him know other than telling him, who has time for guessing games, unless you are still like in high school or something. Girl, just tell him you like him.

Make eye contact with him when he is talking to you about whatever it is, sports, cars, etc... It will show him that you are interested.
If you don't already have his number then give him yours. Most guys are too afraid to take the first step because if they do and the girl doesn't like them, the rejection really downs their ego.
If you don't want one of your friends to tell him then have a talk with them, tell them that you aren't ready for him to know and when you are ready, you want to be the one to tell him.
Find out what he likes, get interested. If he likes hockey you don't have to know everything about it, just get to know the essentials-even if it bores you. That is another big factor that shows guys you are really into them.

shlomogon is right, touch conveys a lot.
I'm not sure if it is same for the guys, but if touch is friendly gesture during conversation or to get my attention if I am not facing them, it makes me feel good.
But those people that are in your face and keep touching your arm several times or dont let go creep me out! hahah

Um .... I think that staring is enough, if you flirt, I don't think he needs to know that you like him, but staring usually does the trick or you can play it hard and act that you don't care,it works sometimes but I can't promise it wilk work so I suggest
you stare and act friendly.
