You need to go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/FX101674081033.aspx and check out the various versions of office ... but I think Home and Student is the least expensive of the 2007 ones.

For 2003, we had a version called "Office Basic" which was purdy much the same thing. Fairly stripped down. Like you, we didn't need Access or much else in the way of "bells and whistles". (Later we upgraded to the full-blown version because I, as a website developer, had to satisfy the needs of a client...but for our personal needs, we would've stayed with the basic stuff.)

And, yes, if you'd rather switch away, and get rid of the "Microsoft addiction," OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org is a very excellent alternative! It can do every blamed thing Office can.

So can Google Docs and Spreadsheets, and with that, you can store your stuff online!

A final alternative, also free, is IBM's Lotus Symphony, based on the same architecture as OpenOffice, just a snazzier interface. http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.jspa

Nope, the student and teacher edition is the cheapest version you'll find. HP does that on most of their computers now, it comes with a trial version of Office 2007 but you have to buy it after 30 days or so.

Yes, new computers are loaded with a trial version of ms office. That works for 20 times and then asks you to buy the software/key.
If you don't have an office installer CD, you may have to buy one.
Or you can use 'open office' , or 'star office'. I think IBM is also coming out with a free office suite.

The Student and Teacher edition is pretty much the cheapest version you can get, unless your school has some other license/marketing agreement directly with MS.

One other alternative is to go with Open Office (linked below). Some folks like using it since it is good enough for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations; and it is mostly compatible with MS formats. Best thing, it's free to install.

Enjoy!

Try Amazon. I buy book and software here because I trust the site. The Student-Teacher version will do the job - just pick the version.
