I agree with you 100%. Ignorance, selfish, stupid, uncaring, feels the need to try to impress others, show off, etc.
I always adopt shelter animals. I love all animals. I would love to have a rag doll for instance but will never ever buy one because there are so many cats in need of homes. I have a maine coone and persian, both rescued. It was just timing on both. I didn't plan it. I don't have papers. Our dog is a mix and is wonderful. (lab/husky) He lives downstairs while the cats are upstairs.
Some people that I know with designer dogs: clueless, need to impress others, etc.
Some other people that I know with designer dogs: genuinely like the breed, well-educated, this is what they wanted, aren't bad people, but a bit show offy maybe
But you're right. We have a lot of shelter pets and feral pets that need homes. I feed a group of feral cats with a group. It breaks my heart, especially with this brutal weather we are having. The solution is so simple. Spay and neuter your pet. Don't adopt a pet unless you are ready to take care of it for life. But in this country, character and integrity don't matter to everyone.
Edit: Growing up, my parents always brought home pets from the shelter. I don't believe the whole thing about breeds. I know someone who just bought a purebred because it was cute. She knows nothing about the dogs and won't. She's a ditze and out to impress. She doesn't have much brains so I guess she uses materialistic things. My parents wound up with purebreds (poodle and irish setter) but they looked at all the dogs and found the dog that would work best with our family, etc. They are smart and I am lucky to have them because they have taught me so much. I have read and continue to read books on dogs/cats.
A lot of people are lazy and don't make the effort to do their homework before adopting a pet. That makes me angry because the animals are the ones that suffer. The humans don't suffer (maybe they do in the long run).

I agree with you. This question comes up often, I think it's because of all of the people in this world that think a mutt is better if I pay 69346743789698 dollars for it! Then it is a status symbol, not a companion. A mutt is a mutt is a mutt, I completely agree with you.
It makes you want to tell them to get it from a shelter and just SAY you paid a bajillion dollars for it. No one will know the difference, as there are no breed standards to refer to, if you insist on looking like an idiot that paid more than an adoption fee for a mutt!!!

It's a lack of education. Most people that have designer "Breeds", or Teacup or Mini versions of a "Real" breed, have somewhere along the way been told that this is a "New Breed" and believed it.
They unsuspectingly walk into a Pet Shop (because that's where you buy pets right?), see the cute puppies and fall for them hook line and sinker. One of the Sales people tells them about the "Special New" breed called a whatever-poo and it's sold.

A man who works in my building came to my office to show off his "Purebred" Labradoodle puppy, which he paid $1500 for and had shipped to MA from Toronto. I told him that Rocky ( that was the pups name) was a cute little guy, but that there is no such thing as a purebred mix, and that he spent a fortune having a dog shipped to him from a breeder he doesn't know from adam when he could have donated $300 to a shelter, saved a life, and went home with one of the MILLIONS of lab mixes waiting to die. He seemed a bit offended....OOPS.
The truth of the matter is, the average person (not dog geeks like we are) does not understand that these dogs are mutts. Nor do they know what a BYB is. Nor do they know that 'Teacup" is a fancy name for a sickly runt. That is why this site is so useful to so many people. Those of us who know share our knowledge, and hopefully the people we help share it with others in similar predicaments.
If I can educate one person, and stop them from supporting puppymillers and BYBS, than I've done my job.
EDIT: Kudos to Miss. Maggie below for a frank and honest answer to such a controversial question

Because they are stupid and uneducated and want to be just like stupid "celebrities" like Paris Hilton.
I am SO SO SO sick of "Teacup" this and "Teacup" that. And then I get blocked and get nasty messages for telling them the truth - teacups do NOT exist. They are sickly little runts, that will probably have health problems, and you should NEVER get a dog just because some idiot celebrity has one.
Haha sorry, you asked this question right after I received yet another nasty message, one that I can't even reply to because that user blocked me for telling her the TRUTH about these teacup dogs. In the message, she actually called me jealous of Paris and her teacup chihuahua...um jealous because I'm not a brainless, unethical idiot...and my dogs are all normal sized and healthy? I don't think so.
Yes, the 'designer dogs' piss me off, but I think the teacups piss me off even more. It's one thing to pay $1000 for a mutt. It's even worse if you pay $1000 for a poorly bred runt.

My stepmom bought a teacup yorkie for 900 dollars from a breeder. And you're right, teacup is just another word for runt who'll have major health problems later in life. It's full grown now and weighs about 4 pounds.
I, personally, think paying for any animal is a travesty. They may not be humans but they are life. Life shouldn't be bought. There are so many strays that need homes right now that breeding shouldn't even be happening.

Why do they buy them? Because they are stupid and haven't taken the time to learn about dogs and dog breeding, so they are taken in by breeder-hucksters that sell them a line of crap about hypoallergenic dogs and creation of a new "breed." So they spend tons of money on dogs that they could get at a shelter for a whole lot less money.

Most people dont want to admit that a "yorkiepoo" is a mutt , they feel its some sort of new breed , the "breeder" even offers CKC papers (Continental Kennel Club, bogus registery)
My belief is you want a mutt great, adopt one there are plenty needing new homes, infact shelters have had mutts for decades and thats what your looking for . The shelter just doesnt use cutesy names ,trying scam people out of money.
I always recommend www.petfinder.com

There is nothing wrong with the dog itself because it was born that way and it can do nothing about it but the real crime here is the people that mate two different breeds together and then pop comes a labradoodle! thinking people will buy these "special" things with these "special" names so they can make money off of them. total bull****
People are sold by the look, the name etc etc
It makes me want to hurl (excuse me while I do so)

For one thing buying is easier than adopting a dog because of the hassle and regulations and paperwork that you have to go through to rescue a dog from a shelter. and second not everyone can have dogs where they live especially in big citys where landlords dont allow its just easier to buy. If i had the chance to adopt a dog from a shelter i would but i cant so id rather just buy it from someone else. As for designer dogs tecnically all dogs are mutts if you think about it those designer dogs are just new breeds.
