They aren't churches, they are pagan temples with a lick of Christian paint. They are tall to impress and browbeat us. The Roman Empire used religion and temples to control the plebs. Not much has changed, as far as intentions go.

They use sky hooks.
You just hook the sky hook on to a cloud and then you pull everything up.
