Joseph being a good husband kept it quite. He and Mary understood these delicacies very well. Any other family members that may have know would keep it quite. God obviously chose to be born in a home with people who do not gossip or act foolishly.
Cooper, it is true some people knew, but we can assume that the people who knew Jesus was born of a virgin when he was a child were not going to attempt to kill him. Look at king Herod! When he heard about Jesus he wanted him exterminated.
"When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi.
Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet: "A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more." When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee." Matthew 2:16-22
Yes, while some people knew of the child born of the virgin for obvious reasons not all people could know this straight away! Joseph himself was told in a dream to leave Israel with the child Jesus!
They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?" Luke 4:22
Jesus was eventually killed as we know for claiming he was the Messiah.

As far as I know the "stoning to death" applied to a woman caught in adultery, not someone pregnant out of wedlock. As such if Joseph had not agreed to still marry her all she would have suffered was the humiliation and rejection by her society.
As it was the angel spoke to Joseph in a dream and explained mary's pregnancy to him, he thus agreed to still marry her and protect her honour. So there was no need for anyone to know that the baby was not Joseph's.

No, society did NOT show MERCY to unwed mothers. First, here is the beginning of how that all got started ---
THE time—December 8, 1854. The place—Saint Peter’s basilica in Rome. In a voice trembling with emotion, Pope Pius IX reads the Latin text of the following decree: “We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, at the first instant of her conception was preserved immaculate from all stain of original sin, by the singular grace and privilege granted her by Almighty God, through the merits of Christ Jesus, Savior of mankind, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore must be firmly and constantly believed by all the faithful.” answer for you now is in the Bible though ---
To Mary, the virgin girl betrothed to Joseph, Gabriel declared: “Good day, highly favored one, Jehovah is with you.” He then told her that she would give birth to a son, Jesus—he “will be called Son of the Most High; and Jehovah God will give him the throne of David his father, . . . and there will be no end of his kingdom.”—Lu 1:26-38. She was "highly favored" in Gods eyes. Thus it was at first hidden that she was pregnant so that she wouldn't be stoned. Joseph went ahead and married her ONLY after an angel appeared to him after he learned of the fact of her pregnancy. Otherwise, yes, she would have been stoned to death.
This is his story --While he was engaged to Mary, “she was found to be pregnant by holy spirit before they were united.” Because Joseph ‘was righteous and did not want to make her a public spectacle, he intended to divorce her secretly.’ After Joseph thought matters over, Jehovah’s angel appeared to him in a dream and said: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife home, for that which has been begotten in her is by holy spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you must call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Upon awakening, Joseph “did as the angel of Jehovah had directed him, and he took his wife home. But he had no intercourse with her until she gave birth to a son; and he called his name Jesus.” (Matthew 1:18-25) Joseph accepted divine direction.

The shotgun wedding described in Scripture covered up the evidence, but, judging by what the religious authorities wanted Jesus to do to the "woman caught in adultery," they would have had no moral qualm with stoning Mary.

This type of virgin is as a slave to a lord.
Hence her reply: be it so, as per my lord.
It's like a nun duped by a priest.
Joesph took the rap.
They were espoused.
Espoused is as married.
Gabriel lied to Mary,
saying she had partiality,
since there is no partiality with God.
So Galatians 1:9 refers to even an "angel",
which in Revelation is a star, or church leader.
It's "allegory" and "mystery" to solve.
Remaining naive will get you duped by law.
Grace --> Mercy ---> Peace with you all. Amen.

Because the Angel said " : “Holy spirit will come upon you, and power of the Most High will overshadow you. For that reason also what is born will be called holy, God’s Son.” (Luke 1:35)
" OVERSHADOW" you...meaning to cast a Shadow of protection against ALL harm.
Thank you.

if Joseph had knot acknowledged the child and married Mary, she would have been stoned. a angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him of the special favor given to him and to Mary. in the Bible it says that Joseph was a righteous man.

For this reason the angel talked to Joseph her fiance, who married her and abstained from sex until Christ was born.
She was covered by Joseph. Mary and Joseph were of the lineage of King David.

Visited by Angel. About the end of 3 B.C.E., the angel Gabriel was sent by God to the virgin girl Mary in the town of Nazareth. “Good day, highly favored one, Jehovah is with you,” was the angel’s most unusual greeting. When he told her that she would conceive and give birth to a son called Jesus, Mary, who at the time was only engaged to Joseph, asked, “How is this to be, since I am having no intercourse with a man?” “Holy spirit will come upon you, and power of the Most High will overshadow you. For that reason also what is born will be called holy, God’s Son,” the angel explained. Thrilled with the prospect, yet with fitting modesty and humility, she replied: “Look! Jehovah’s slave girl! May it take place with me according to your declaration.”—Lu 1:26-38.
To strengthen her faith further for this momentous experience, Mary was told that her relative Elizabeth, in her old age, was already six months pregnant, because the miraculous power of Jehovah had removed her barrenness. Mary paid her a visit, and when she entered Elizabeth’s home the infant in Elizabeth’s womb leaped with joy, whereupon she congratulated Mary, saying: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (Lu 1:36, 37, 39-45) Thereupon Mary broke forth in inspired words magnifying Jehovah for his goodness.—Lu 1:46-55.
After a visit of about three months with Elizabeth in the Judean hills, Mary returned to Nazareth. (Lu 1:56) When it came to Joseph’s notice (likely through disclosure of the matter to him by Mary) that she was pregnant, he intended to divorce her secretly rather than expose her to public shame. (Engaged persons were viewed as married, and a divorce was required to dissolve the engagement.) But Jehovah’s angel appeared, revealing to Joseph that what had been begotten in her was by holy spirit. Joseph thereupon complied with the divine instruction and took Mary as his wife, “but he had no intercourse with her until she gave birth to a son; and he called his name Jesus.”—Mt 1:18-25.
So as far as any outsider's knowing she pregnant, they didn't. As far as they were concerned that happened After her marriage.

She was made pregnant by Holy Spirit and when she told her husband to be Joseph he believed her and supported her, I guess he was a nice guy and loved her. I think he married her before Jesus was born (which is why she went on the trip with him) but they just didn't have sex til the baby was born.
(Not religious, it's the basic nativity story)
