From my physiology class, I vaguely remember that body will protect the muscle until there is nothing more to burn such as blood sugar or fat.

NO, THERE WRONG, YOU WILL BURN FAT. THE PERSON IS GETTING CONFUSED WITH ENERGY. IF YOU DON'T EAT ENOUGH CALORIES, AND YOU NEED ENERGY TO WORKOUT, YOUR BODY WILL RESORT TO FAT RESTORES, WHEN IT RUNS OUT OF FAT, THEN IT WILL START TO USE MUSCLE, AND TEAR IT DOWN FOR ENERGY, BUT IT WILL USE FAT FIRST, THEN START TO TEAR DOWN MUSCLE (THIS YOU DON'T WANT).

Body Burns Fat Before Muscle

I suppose sit ups aren't the best for back, so maybe leg drops would be good for you.
I'd say do as much as you feel you can, that's what I was told when I was doing those sorts of work outs: do it until you can't do it anymore
Sorry I can't give much advice, maybe try a body building forum for info from people who know best (https://tr.im/NOJjV)

I understand that this seems like a long time, but in 6 months you're gonna be wishing you could get a 6 pack in 1-2 weeks again. Find the motivation and start now - the more you put it off, the harder it becomes to achieve. Good luck!

Your body doesn't like doing this but under extreme circumstances of prolonged starvation, your body will start to burn muscle for energy. How does this affect your diet?

To preserve muscle when you're losing weight, you should have a good resistance training program. Don't try losing more than 1-2 pounds per week and make sure you're eating enough carbohydrates.

Build Ripped Muscle Fast

I believe your body eats away at your muscle when you are malnourished before it eats away at fat. Your body gets more of the nutrients and things it needs from muscle which is why that goes first. This is a big reason why it is so unhealthy to be anorexic. If you want to "burn" fat, then exercise and eat healthy. Not eating is just going to help you lose muscle mass, which will make you weak and sick.

Gaining muscle requires that you eat more calories than you burn. For
those with high metabolisms, that may seem impossible, but if you try
a few of these tricks, you'll find that adding calories to your day is
easier than you think:

•Choose calorie-rich foods like granola, bagels, biscuits, avocados,
olives, corn, meat, nuts, peanut butter, milk, yogurt and cheese.
•Add extra calories to your meals by using milk instead of water for
soups, sauces and hot cereals.
•Sprinkle powdered milk into casseroles.
•Add calorie-rich foods (like avocado, cheese and dressing) to
sandwiches and salads
•Mix beans, meat or cheese into pasta or side dishes
•Snack on yogurt, shakes, crackers and dip
•Keep a food diary for a week or so to get an idea of what you're
eating and where you can add more calories
The trick is to add calories without adding too much saturated fat.
You can also consider downing smoothies or meal replacement shakes in
between meals. Read more here:

SINCE YOU ARE TYPING THIS QUESTION ON A HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED PIECE OF EQUIPMENT I THINK IT IS FAIR TO ASSUME YOU ARE NOT SUFFERING FROM MALNUTRITION. THE MOST PREVALENT CAUSE FOR YOUR BODY TO GO INTO A CETABOLIC STATE WHERE YOU WOULD BE EXERTING YOURSELF TO THE POINT OF BURNING MUSCLE WHICH THE BODY WILL DO EVEN WITH SUFFICIENT FAT STORES AND SUGAR TO BURN. THIS USUALLY HAPPENS IF YOU JOG IN EXCESS OF AN HOUR OR ANY OTHER DEMANDING CARDIOVASCULAR TRAINING FOR THAT MATTER. IT WOULD ONLY BE NOTICEABLE IF YOU WERE TO JOG 2-3 HOURS A DAY 4 TAIMES A WEEK FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THOUGH.

Yes, especially if you don't eat enough protein. If it wasn't true, then there wouldn't be so many skinny-fat people in the world, i.e. people with low lean mass and high body fat due to starvation diets.
