My parents are getting a german shorthair puppy (female) on January 5th. She will be a hunting dog. My parents already have a drauthaur (I know that's not even close on the spelling).
Anyway.... I thought I could make them a new puppy kit. I myself have two female dogs, but they are small dogs (Jack Russell/ Min Pin) and it's been a while.
I was wondering if A) you think this is a good gift idea
and B) what I should get?

I was wondering what would be appropriate.... if you were getting a new puppy what would you like to get as a present and what would you want to get yourself?

Also... any appropriate toy suggestions? The only toys that my dogs cannot destroy are the black Kongs in the large size. The anhihilate everything else. I know not all dogs are like this.

I'm getting good ideas... I'm making a list out of the things I like!! Keep them coming!!!!
My dad doesn't need a training book, he's amazing. His dog Braun is the most well-behaved dog ever. He can do some pretty impressive stuff as well. My dad has been training bird dogs for years.

I think that is a great idea! More people need to give these doggie gift baskets with an 'IOU a puppy' card in them instead of actually getting the dogs for Christmas.

Some things you could include are...

-Kong
-Bite sized training treats
-Stuffed toys/toys that squeak (the AKC has some really cute ones that would be perfect for a hunting dog, I'll include a link for you!)
-A gift card to their local pet store for supplies
-A brightly colored leash and collar
-A gift card to obedience classes
-High quality puppy food

The possibilities really are endless! Good luck! Have fun with it!

I think it's a nice gift... Since the puppy will be small and still have baby teeth I would get some soft toys like stuffed toys and a puppy KONG which is softer than the BLACK KONG>.. I would also get some nice treats but, stay away from anything RAWHIDE for awhile a puppies system cannot handle anything hard like that... Maybe if you know what kind of dog food they want get a small bag of that... Feeding dishes are good as well as grooming supplies like a shedding brush, shampoo, leash, collar. Things of that nature..

Good luck

I think it's a great gift idea.

Since I just purchased a puppy in September, I'll tell you what I've used the most (of all the paraphenalia that I've purchased).

A crate
Squeaky toys
All natural puppy treats
Paw wax (if it's cold where your parents are)
Leash/collar
Frontline (for puppies)
Heartguard (for puppies)
Gift certificate to a local vet and/or groomer

Have fun with it. It's a great idea!

Sounds like a great idea, you could them a bed for the new pup, and put some treats and toys in it and wrap it up! Perhaps a cute matching harness and leash? Pretty smelling puppy shampoo? Any and all supplies would be great in preparation of a new critter!

I think that is a GREAT idea.

I would get them some treats
Maybe a book on their new dog
Some chew toys
Maybe some bath products for the new pup

That should about cover it I would imagine.

Sounds like a good idea. How about a dog crate and put goodies inside? Toys, training treats, collar, leash, etc.

You could give them leashes, collars, toys like kongs and nylabones, puppy shampoo, grooming supplies, or maybe a gift card to a pet supply store.

Things *I* would like as gifts:

*Gift certificate for puppy kindergarten or obedience classes
*Gift certificate to White Pine Outfitters.. their limited slip collars are wonderful, leashes are easy on the hands and their walking belt is GREAT. http://www.whitepineoutfitters.com/catalog_category.cfm?queries_index=index6&title_bar=Leads%20%2D%20including%20%20Hands%20Free&ProductCode=4
*Stainless steel bowls- never can have too many
*Stainless steel bucket w/ brass clip to hang- never can have too many
*Books on training (I have a ton of these... but I've never had a bird dog, so if I was to get a bird dog, I'd want to know about training it)
*Map of local dog parks (great for a gift basket).
*Gift Certificate for self-grooming place

good luck!!
