I've never heard depression called a disease. It's a disorder.

There are two types of depression, clinical and psychological. Clinical is most often the result of a deficiency of a chemical the body makes naturally, like lithium. Psychological is most often the result of a traumatic event in a person's life but not always. There are many reasons for psychological depression. The best thing to do is get blood work done to find out if you suffer from clinical depression.

Those with clinical depression have to stay on meds. People who suffer from psychological depression need meds and therapy to find the underlying cause and to deal with it. Some of them are able to get off medication and live a "normal" life. I take care of the elderly and they tend to suffer from psychological depression because they've outlived their friends, some family, and feel like a burden to others. Medication keeps them levelled out so they don't have so many 'low' moments.

People with bipolar disorder usually are on medication for life as most times it's associated with a chemical deficiency.

Depression is not fatal in the sense that cancer or heart disease can be. The thoughts that go along with depression may cause a person to harm themselves, sometimes fatally.

Depression/anxiety whatever the label - many can be cured with assistance and can be caused by great stress, loss of a loved one, even loss of a job & income, this can be cured. However, clinical depression may require long treatment, medication, psychologists even psychiatrist but it can be managed. This is not considered a terminal illness. If you are speaking for yourself then make an appointment with your doctor and he may even recommend a specialist for you to speak with.

Try not to worry about death just find out more about the process. We are born and live to the day we die and die we will sooner or later. However, I wish you a much brighter future ahead with something to look forward to besides the bottom line.

I have lived with clinical depression for most of my life but I'm still here at 70 looking forward to a happy holiday season with family & friends.

Depression does have a cure. The cure is you. Talk to someone. I promise it will help. I spend two years deep in depression. I got a new job doing something I'm good at to help boost my self esteem. Then I bought one of those depression journals at borders. I followed it and did what it said. It really helped. I would recommend buying one. It doesnt really matter which one.

Just remember that everything happens for a reason and that depression can be temporary. Fight it. Aren't your dreams worth fighting for?

other than drugs, no there are no cures for depression. But you are not going to die from it unless you allow yourself to slip down to that state. I once was severely depressed. I took prozac, saw a therapist/psychologist, and still tried to commit suicide twice. Then one day during that last attempt a friend called me as I was going to end it all, and I decided what I was doing was stupid and I would never be like that again. I still have my ups and downs, and I still get depressed from time to time, but NEVER that way. You have to pick yourself up and make yourself happy or else you will die. Good luck.

I am a depressive and have been since I can't remember when. It is not fatal, but it feels like you can't seem to help yourself out of it. My most hated answer to to this question is "why don't you just pull yourself out of it " and "why don't you just pray yourself out of it".Well, while prayers are good for the soul, you still need something else. I've found that agood nights sleep, an interest in something you really like, and joining groups with similar interests/problems help. But the best thing is to find the best--well-suited psychiatrist .

there's a cure, It's called, get up, get out, and change your way of thinking. Listen, it's true that a "person is about as happy as they make up their own mind to be".. That means that you HAVE the cure.. Positive thinking, being happy, even in the face of sadness. There's so much good in the world, and so much to experience. Do you want to throw it away and let yourself slip into a deeper depression? If not, you CAN reverse the trend, but you have to do it on your own!
Decide your fate!

The cure for depression is inside yourself...Only you can diagnose why you feel the way you do. Besides if you are depressed then you know happiness exists on the opposite side of the spectrum why don't you set out on a journey and explore the other side?

Life is what you make it. We are in a society where we make pills for everything except diseases. Can't sleep, here is a pill, can't control your kids, jack them up on this, you're unhappy, ok take this. It is ridiculous. All of these mental problems that people are having occur because we do not work together as a society. We need support, all people do. Human interaction is the cure to depression, but people are work jobs they hate and driving long distances to get there so human interaction is out of the question when these sour pill popping beings get home.

There are cure's for depression, There are therapist's you can talk to. You can decide to take control of your life and not allow depression to consume you. I understand that depression is serious and some handle it different than others, Im not making light of such a serious matter , but rather than giving in to depression fight against it. Fight for your life , dont begin to see death as the answer for solving the problem of depression.
