walking is better, you don't damage your knee and ankle joints the way runners/jogger always do.
Your diet is atrocious, and you need to learn better nutrition.

The thing to measure is distance. I've read in a few health/fitness magazines that walking 1 mile gives you the same benefit as jogging a mile.

The thing that may confuse someone is where you're measuring based on time of your workout. Jogging for 30 minutes is better for you than walking for 30 minutes (based on calories burned, etc.) only because in 30 minutes you will cover a longer distance by jogging. In those 30 minutes, you may be able to jog 3 miles, but only walk 2. Get it?

I would maybe have a hard boiled egg instead of the sausage patty - nothing much nutritional in the sausage, and it's loaded with fat and nitrates and sodium based perservatives. Hamburger isn't that bad if its lean and you skip the bun. Maybe add some roasted veggies to the burger or a salad.

So start walking!

I assume you want to honest answer, and it is "No," to both questions.

You aren't getting your heart rate up as high when you are walking 4 miles as if you were running. Yes, it is better for you than not doing anything (which I assume is your alternative because of your health problems), but it is not AS GOOD as running.

As far as the food, it could use a makeover. It looks like you are using portion control, which is good, but you just aren't eating the right stuff.

For breakfast, cut the sausage. Add fruits and a couple tablespoons of nuts, and maybe a boiled or scrambled egg (use a non-stick pan and no oil or just a tiny bit of olive oil).

For lunch, could you eat something not fried? Switch to a chicken or turkey sandwich on whole wheat, and skip the hamburger all together. Again, add fruits and veggies, raw or steamed if possible.

For dinner, the beans are good but skip the cornbread. Corn meal really isn't that nutritious. Try whole wheat bread or pasta and some more steamed veggies.

Also, you're not drinking any milk or water? Drink 2-3 cups of skim milk every day (you can add it to your oatmeal!) and 8-10 cups of water. Avoid sodas (eve diet) and juices.

high intensity cardio offers more benefits than does low intensity cardio, science has proven this time and time again. walking is a good way to begin to exercise but it is not optimum for fat loss. walking does not increase the resting metabolic rate (RMR) for long after the conclusion of exercise. the increase in the RMR after exercise is were real fat loss occurs not during the actual exercise session.

walking will help to increase insulin sensitivity and your cardiovascular peformance to a small degree so it definetly aids in weight loss and weight management. ultimately the diet that follow determines your body composition (the amount of muscle and fat).

Walking is better, and it won't work unless you walk at least 20 minutes (to start burning fat instead of glucose). So aim for thirty to forty minutes five times a week. You can increase your pace as you feel better, but you don't have to run. Again, it's the amount of time that is the key, as long as you feel your heart rate increase some.

If your eating is better than it used to be, kudos for you! Feeling good is important so listen to your body.

As your avatar hopefully does not depict you as being an actual nurse, I would think that you would know what is good or not.
Your diet is horrible, but walking is much better for you than running, it's not as hard on your body, especially your joints.
