Hey i wont go into detail as there's many good answers here that answer it for you....but basically the prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) was illiterate and could not read or write.God declared his teachings (basically parts of the Quran) through the angel Jibraeel (Gabriel) to Muhammad (s.a.w). This was done Orally. People at the time learnt things orally and had impressive memories. And so many Muslims memories different parts of the qurana and it was learnt to the strictest detail. And yes it was revealed over a period of 23 years and then after rthe prophets death people wrote what they memorised down to make the complete Quran....and there you have it! unchanged and still the same today!

The Glorious Quran, the Muslims’ religious Scripture, was revealed in Arabic to the Prophet Muhammad, may God praise him, through the angel Gabriel. The revelation occurred piecemeal, over a period of twenty-three years, sometimes in brief verses and sometimes in longer chapters.
The Quran (lit. a “reading” or “recitation”) is distinct from the recorded sayings and deeds (Sunnah) of the Prophet Muhammad, which are instead preserved in a separate set of literature collectively called the “Ahadeeth” (lit. “news”; “report”; or “narration”).
The Quran seeks to bring people back to the true faith that was taught by Jesus, and by his true disciples who continued in his teaching. That teaching emphasized a continued commitment to the first commandment that God is alone. In the Quran, God directs Muslims to call readers of the Bible back to that true faith. God have said in the Quran:
Say: “O people of the Book (Christians and Jews)! Come to a word that is just between us and you: that we shall worship none but God, and that we shall associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords beside God.” (Quran, 3:64)

I only know part of the story but Muhammad got the Qur'an from the Arch Angel Gabriel.
To answer the other question. The Muslim's are from one son of Abraham and the Christians are from another son of Abraham.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did not write the Holy Quran. The Quran was revealed to him by angel Gabriel and he spread the revelation through his message. The revelation was spread orally at first.
The Quran was composed on a book format by his companions while he was alive.

Islam began in Arabia in 622 A.D. It was started by Mohammed, a camel driver who could not read or write. Mohammed became discouraged with idol worship in his home city of Mecca. He had learned from Jews and Christians that there is only one true God.
Mohammed claimed the angel, Gabriel, came to him. He said Gabriel told him he had been chosen to be the last and greatest prophet of Allah. At a temple in Mecca called the “ka’aba,” a black stone was worshipped. Three hundred and sixty idols were also worshipped there. One of these idols was “Allah,” the moon god. Mohammed said Allah was the one true god that all men should worship.
Mohammed also claimed that Allah revealed his will to him. This message came to him in various ways, according to Mohammed and his followers. Sometimes Gabriel appeared to him. Sometimes he had dreams or visions. Mohammed’s followers memorized these messages. After Mohammed died, they were written down. During the days of Caliphs Umar and Uthman, Mohammed’s successors, these “revelations” were collected together to form the Qu’ran (or Koran). The Qu’ran is accepted by Moslems as their holy scriptures.

Because the message of Jesus was corrupted by trinity, God sent Muhammad to restore the pure believe in God with no father, mother, daughter or son. So it was the message and Al-Quraan.

Islam, which literally means "submission", was created by Mohammed in the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, in 622 AD. Tradition holds that Mohammed was an illiterate but shrewd merchant and married to a wealthy widow named Khadija. Mohammed sometimes went into the hills around Mecca to get away from the city. He would go to a cave and meditate. While meditating, he heard the voice of the Angel Gabriel, who would dictate the word of God/Allah to Mohammed. When Mohammed would wake, he'd go home and have his wife write down the dictation. This became the Qu'ran.

God revealed it to Prophet Muhammad and then Prophet Muhammed memorised it and later his companions had written it up. Prophet Muhammad did not write it himself as he was illiterate. The Islamic religion started when the first man was created e.g. Adam.
