If it's a new car I would say: Honda Fit, Toyota Corolla/Yaris, Scion xD. All have good fuel economy and are inexpensive to maintain.

If I were buying an inexpensive used car (five years old or more) I would choose: Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla/Echo, Mitsubishi Galant and maybe a Geo Prizm

The Jetta diesel gets around 45+. The Toyota Yaris does well with regular gas, as well. Don't rule out the Mini Cooper.

The most economic car is one that doesn't run. You never have to put gas in it and it doesn't pollute the air with emission cause it won't start.
