I am not helpful at all with suggesting names, but maybe it would get you out of "gray" mode (and so, Smokey) if you realize that, in cat fanciers' and cat breeders' language, your kitten is not "gray" but "blue". Other than that, the two greatest cat names suited their cats so very well. One was a very large, black, clumsy male who had nothing wrong with him but fell off of everything -- the couch, the bed, the dresser. His name was Stumblef**k. Another entirely pure white, whole male cat whose testicles were enormous and black was named Balzac (but guess what his nickname was). And one unbelievably elegant Himalayan male with long, soft fur it was impossible not to touch, with china blue eyes and rich seal points, whose name was "Slugger".
You'll come up with something, but make it soon, because he's going to start to recognize "Smokey" soon.

Try to figure out the personality of the cat, then pick a name accordingly. That's usually where you'll find they'll respond to it the most, too. If he's a cat that likes to jump, name him Jumper, or if he chews, name him Chomper.

I think "Little Miss Sunshine's" name suggestions are absolutely adorable for a gray cat.

be creative...the name doesn't have to relate to the cat's features. I had a cat just like the one you described...we called her Hiedi. We also had a black cat named Twist. Just think of any name you like...that's what I did.
But if you have to go with the features of the cat and what it looks like..."Sunny" sounds cool (yellow eyes).
