There are a couple ways to help reduce the shedding, first make sure he is on a high quality food. The best are foods that you buy at a natural pet store, or getting him on the raw diet. But if that isn't something you can afford, try Royal Canine, Eukanuba, Iams, or Science Diet. Also buy some EFA (fatty acids) caps and call your vet to get dosage instructions for your dogs weight. Brush daily, and bathe every other week with an oatmeal based shampoo. I take it that it was not your fathers idea to get a dog? Beagles shed a lot and unless you get a poodle or Maltese you are going to have fur everywhere, especially before winter.

Short haired breeds like beagles and labs are notoriously the worst shedders of the dog world. Shedding in these breeds is not a seasonal thing it's all year. But there are things that you can do to lessen the shedding. Yes your dad is right it could be the food... he needs to be on a high protein food. Lots of omega 3 fatty acids (also comes in pill form) will make for healthier skin and coat and less shedding. Some good brands of food are Nutro, Blue Buffalo, Authority (only at PETSMART), and Royal Canin. Brands like Pedigree, Iams, Sciece Diet, and Beneful are not reccomended. Basically if you can buy it at Safeway DONT!

He's now getting an adult coat.
Adult beagles shed quite a lot. Twice a year they shed even more.
They only ways to REDUCE it (you can't stop it) is to feed him a quality diet and brush him frequently.

The ideas so far are great.. good food and oatmeal shampoo baths.. another one is a small comb .. the one brand I know offhand is called a Shed Ender.. (it looks similar to a flea comb).. Do this once or twice a week and the shedding should be tolerable..

Bathing and combing helps with sheds.... Bathing is great for getting all that loose hair out.

Your dad could be right, diet definitely has a lot to do with it. Re-evaluate what you're feeding him and if necessary switch to a healthier food. This site is VERY helpful: www.dogfoodanalysis.com.
Since he's so young this does seem a bit unusual to me to it may also be worth at least calling your vet.
