From what I gather, no - people tend to worry more about situational awareness than long term hearing problems.

On one training exercise during my recruit course with mere blanks, I put some earplugs in so I wouldn't hurt my ears. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out what my section buddies were saying without going "WHAT?"

Every time we left the wire, we were supposed to be wearing earplugs under our headsets.

We were also supposed to be wearing gloves, goggles, and the extremely stifling and annoying neck attachment to the IBA.

Did we? EVER?

No way. None of the above.

Earplugs would impair our hearing, and the rest - it was too darn hot.

While it is important in combat situations the infantry soldier to hear what is going on around them. It is the soldier that is firing the big guns that need to protect their ears since without such protection could result in a hearing loss if not immediate then it is is as they age.

Hearing protection is important and there are some pretty good options out there. We used an integrated headset, that provides hearing protection (if the external microphones are overloaded, they shut down), and a radio communications link. The system is made by Peltor International. There are of course cheaper alternatives as well. Thankfully both of my eardrums are still intact.

Earplugs are required if you leave the wire in Iraq. One of the things that are 'issue' are 'combat earplugs' that block loud noises but not soft ones.

I relieved an NCO the second time I caught his troops without their required protective gear.

No usually, although actual combat is a LOT louder than you hear in the movies!

That wouldn't be very smart if they do. The M16 is quieter than the AK 47, and I still don't wear them. Its pretty loud, but you wanna hear whats going on. After a while you'll get used to the noise.
