Yesterday my cat was neutered... and today he is spraying (just picked him up from the vet). What can I do to stop his spraying?

once a cat starts spraying, getting him neutered isn't a guarentee that he will stop. if you give it sometime, it may be less. you can talk to a vet and see if there is anything that you can do to help with this.

Give him a chance, it was only done yesterday! The hormones will still be in him and will take a few weeks to wear off. However if the cat is fully grown, there is no guarantee that he will stop this behaviour as it may be habit now if you didn't neuter young enough. The stink of the urine will however subside after a couple of weeks max.

There are sprays you can buy to discourage cats from marking in certain places. If the cat started spraying spontenously, that maybe the result of a change in the household, and until that change is rectified or he gets used to it, he won't stop spraying.

Well done on getting him neutered though, you've ensured you won't be contributing to the overpopulation of pets - the main reason why we neuter male cats.

As others have already said, give his hormones time to settle and see if that solves the problem. Make sure you clean thoroughly, any areas that he sprayed, because as long as he can detect his own scent there, he will be attracted to top it up everytime it fades. Be patient and don't punish him - a stressed cat will spray even more.

If he should continue to spray, then you need to think what might be triggering the behaviour. If it gets to that stage, the link below has an article on Feline Territory Marking that has lots of advice that will help you deal with the problem.

About a week after my cat was neutered he stopped spraying as well.
So give him some time.
If he still continues, ask your vet. See if they don't have a shot to neutralize the testosterone in his system.

It may take a month or so before his system and decrease in hormones get adjusted.
But like MacLeod7 's ans., sometimes it's a now a "set behaviour" problem. I hope it's not,.. give it some time.
Was he neutered about 8 mths. old? (which is the time I usually fix my males and I find the appropriate age)
Sometimes fixing a male when over a year, like 18 mths. and older when they have already established spraying I find that they still do.
Good luck.

like everybody else is saying, it just takes a little bit for his hormones to adust to his bodily change... as a Tip, I'd say keep him away from carpeted areas and furniture... maybe just put him in the bathroom or garage until the change happens....

Cat Urine is one of the HARDEST scents to get rid of(my opinion anyway..), but White Vinegar in warm soapy water, or cat urine remover helps. also after you clean it up, put some baking soda on it and then vaccume after a few minutes.

Goodluck!
