In the begging I started by doing free stuff for friends and family. Usually I get hired by companies to shoot their wedding videos, but they pay me by the hour and not by the job. So they make the big bucks and I get a small share. I want to know how to find these jobs on my own in order to charge them my price, which is the same as a company price but at least I get most of the pay for "my" work. thanks in advance

Wedding magazine advertisement classified or spread, local paper classified or spread, yellow pages, start a website, put samples on YouTube, have a info booth at the county fair, and if you hear anyone mention "wedding" hand them a business card.

Just make sure you are good enough to warrant all of this.

Also, make sure your camera is 3 CCD and Pro grade.

This is the camera I use:

Take a look in the phone book and all sorts of newspapers (dailys, freebies, penny savers in the mail) to see where other wedding video businesses advertise. Then advertise there too.

Get business cards made up. See if you can place them in bridal shops -- they may not allow this.

Make up a brochure/flyer about your business.

See if there are wedding fairs in your area: these are once-a-year events where businesses have booths.

Send wedding planners your card and brochure. Find wedding planners in the same sources mentioned in paragraph 1 above.

Be sure to have some sample videos for prospective clients to see.

Your local library probably has books on how to start a business (general overview) and how to advertise. Ask a librarian.

Things that drive people crazy when they are trying to hire someone to do anything: failure to return calls promptly; failure to show up for appointments for estimates, etc.; wild & crazy phone messages (save those for your personal life); weird people answering the phone. Try not to do any of those.

On weddings, get friendly with the photographers. We are often asked if we have a video person. Offer the photographer a 10% kick back for anything booked through them.
