i think it means this: as you're going through life, you do not understand, really, what is going on or what this means. but then, in the future, you will probably understand what you did that [thing] for, or what was happening, or why people acted a certain way. but, you can't live it backwards. you must live life forwards (regular) so it's a bummer. hope this helps! i added this part, because of assumption. if you lived it backwards, you will never learn from a mistake

We can only understand what happens in life after we've already lived it, which is why it can only be understood backwards. "Hindsight is 20/20." That's what the first part means. It must be lived forward, because you can neither dwell on the past, nor stop time from carrying you forward. You have to move on, move ahead, plan, and aim for points in the future, whether it's tomorrow, or twenty years from now, but never before now.

I figure you actually mean 'What does this mean'.

Life can only be understood backwards... This means you can only make sense of the things that have happened in the past - You can only understand things that are in the past..

But it must be lived forward.. Your life involves you going into the future, experiencing new things.

Life can only be understood after we live it and we're looking back on it...(Like not understanding why something went a certain way..but looking backwards (in the past) we then realize why it went the way it did.)

But must be lived forward..(we can't go back in time, but must live it day by day)

It means that you don't always have the answers until you've gone through something.

It's another way of saying "hindsight is 20/20," and it adds a little bit of wordplay-wisdom to say that you must live without the benefit of that hindsight.

a lame paraphrase:
Life can only be understood when you look back on it; but it must be lived before you get that chance.

You've heard people say, I wish I'd known then what I know now. This is just another form of that.
You've got to live, decide, act, and move forward in life, but it is only after much experience that you feel you have the wisdom you needed then to make the best choice.

life can only be understood backwards; meaning you can look back into the past at things you did but you cannot go back;but it must be lived forward; you can not go back in time and change the past

To me it means that you only really truly learn how to live life through experiences (moving forward) but you may not understand it until you've been through it and reflected back on it (understood backwards).

I don't know. Just my thoughts.

20/20 hindsight - we understand life after it happened due to cause and effect (backward). But we cannot (at least most believe) predict the future (forward). However, this is the meaning though it is not necessarily a truism.

You can learn from mistakes in the past, and understand more about life that way, but you still have to go into the future. This makes us basically either always having to look back or be essentially blind to the meaning of life.
