My fiancee is in AIT at Ft Huachuca, AZ. We want to get married during exodus break, when he is home. He will return to AZ to continue AIT at the beginning of the year until March. There is a rumor/story stating if he marries during exodus he must stay in AZ for a year without any dependants and would have to live off base. Has anyone ever heard of this? Or any truths to this?
Thanks for any help!

Ft. Huachuca has some different rules especially when it comes to Students being trained there. I think what your fiance was trying to tell you is that if he gets married during the break that he will not be allowed to live off the post with you. This could be for as long as a year, depending on what training program he is in. When he receives his PCS orders to a permanent duty station, then you can live together as man and wife.
The other thing he may be saying is that if he marries on the break than that will automatically make Ft Huachuca his permanent duty station and that would be for a minimum of one year. The reason you would have to live off post is that housing on the base is very limited and as a young private he would not have enough seniority to get housing.

You have a very good answer from the gentleman in the Dress Blues. However, I would suggest that your fiance check with the post JAG to get the truth to the story. As for getting married during the exodus, what is the rush? You cannot live with him until after he finishes AIT as he must live on base and as a PVT does not qualify for base housing. in most cases, he will have to stay in the quarters for students, no exceptions. (My husband has been in the Army for 20 plus years, and every school he goes to is like that, students all stay in student quarters.) Nor will the military pay for you to move to AZ just so you can see him on weekends. The only thing getting married now accomplishes is that you have his name a few months earlier, and they may (not a guarantee) pay to move you to his first duty station.

If you were to get married during his break you wont be able to live with him because of him being at AIT. Once he gets a duty station you will be allowed to live together. Base housing has housing for pvt's the wait will more than likely be very long. If you decide to get married anyway and be apart till he is done with AIT you can save the Housing allowance you get for being married and use it later to move once he gets his duty station or save it for other things you want or need. Alot of people do that even during deployments wives move back with family and save the housing allowance every month till their spouse is back. Talk it over with him.

Well, it's not true. If he's in AIT at Huachuca, they're not going to pay to move you out there, and therefore he will continue to reside in the barracks. I would suggest waiting until he's at his first duty station. There's a chance he'll end up in Korea, and you probably don't want to spend the first year and change of married life apart.

can this marriage possibly wait til he gets to his first duty assignment? if not you are gonna be on here for question about travel, transportation of household goods, and a whole bunch of other stuff not to mention how tricare works. if you all were smart he would take leave after his AIT, do the HRAP program or something, then he comes home yal get married then he can get his orders amended while he's home and make travel arrangements.

i just went through all this with one of my soldiers and it was a headache mostly for her though. your best bet is to wait. if not then get ready for the red tape to start flying cause i guarantee the S-1 at his AIT is gonna screw this up.

ok thats not a true rumor.... first of all he has to live on post if he is in AIT... secondly if you get married no matter when, you are automatically considered his dependent..... therefore he will start getting sepration pay and basic housing allowance... he needs to get you registered in DEERS and you will need to get an ID card.... also there is enrolling in Tricare (insurance) and for all that you have to have your marriage licenses....
good luck with your marriage and congratulations!!!! being married to a soldier is a hard thing to do but its very rewarding..... there is a lot of loving without something to hold on too..... but like i said it is very rewarding!!
