You are speaking of a receptionist or a medical assistant, depends on what that office calls it.
In college, you can take courses that help you understand record retention, phone skills, etc. Some colleges offer courses called "Medical Assisting" or similar. I would caution you, some courses are really good while others are no brainers, so choose carefully what you take. If you already have computer skills, you certainly don't need that course.
Make sure you have future plans to keep moving up the ladder, from assistant to hygneist, etc. Get into an office that will allow that, you don't want to find yourself doing this for 10 years.

I presume you wish to be either the Administrative Assistant or Office Manager.
First, don't use the word "like" as you have in your question. Also, check your spelling. You won't be appreciated if you type in a misspelled diagnosis, which in some cases a simple letter change can be life or death.
As proficient as your computer skills might be, you'll have to have some bookkeeping course under your belt. Not all offices use MS Excel, some use Quickbooks, Quicken, Lotus Notes, etc.
Lastly (and most importantly), go to your own doctor or dentist, and ask their advice. They would be best in giving you a detailed idea of what they look for in an Admin or Office Manager.
Good Luck in your career search!!!

This is called a Medical Receptionist. Typically, you need some background in a medical/dental environment as well as administrative experience. Normally, as far as I know, a high school degree would be sufficient but would depend on the practice and the level of administrative assistance they need.
If you're looking to do typing of records, then you may wish to look at becoming a Medical Transcriptionist. You would find a load of info on this online, there's schooling for this or online degrees. Hope this helps!

You either want to be a medical transcriptionist, Medical coding and billing specialist or an office clerk.
There are educational programs for the transcriptionist and medical coding. You can also get certified as a medical coder. Most medical offices, whether a medical doctor or dentist, will want some kind of formal education in these because of the HIPPA laws and liabilities that accompany these laws.

Lots of folks work in a doctor's office. Nurse's assistants, receptionists, medical billing folks. If you stay a home and watch tv some day, you'll see a bunch of commercials for training.
I think what you're really talking about is the "medical receptionist" though.

Contact your local Employment Security Commission (or equivalent) office or your school guidance counselor for information about careers in Medical Records, Medical Transcription, and as a Medical Receptionist. Special training is required for all of these careers.
Good luck!
