Of course you can!

You can learn how to be a game programmer right from your own rocking chair at home.

Microsoft will walk you through self-paced tutorials and teach you how to do this. They also provide the program that it takes to actually be able to make your own gaming applications. Check out http://www.microsoft.com/express/interest/default.aspx and scroll down to click on Game Development.

The Game Development website http://www.microsoft.com/express/gamedevelopment/ will give you the resources and programs to enable you to be a game coder.

And you know what? The products are all free! You can start making your own game right now without limitations.

Good luck! I hope you do well. You can do anything you want. Microsoft has now made a lot of things much easier for us computer programmers to develop applications and games and such.

Welcome to coding.

Hope this helps.

Game designers often have more of a life than game programmers as designers rarely do any real programming. They may do some conceptual work with an existing system as a proof on concept, but they rarely get into programming the final product. The amount of a life one has greatly depends on the company, game, publisher, target demographic and perfectionism of the designer.

Game designers need to know a fair bit about a lot of stuff outside the game world, but also need to know games fairly well (at least in their demographic range.)

Being a history buff can be quite helpful, for example. Less in the sciences, more in the liberal arts. Knowing what's "fun."

My advice, if you wish to learn how to game design is to get into modding existing games like the Half-Life series. If you want to get even further in-depth dig into one of the many game engines which are cheap/free licenses for your use. Remember there are many open source game engines out there.

There the difference between game designer and game programmer. Programmers have to be very good with computer programming.

Designers do almost everything else conceptual (like the looks, game rules, etc.).

There are school (colleges) that teach game design. It is hard. I think it is harder than most other science (I studied both science and computer programming). You will have no life outside of work. Sounds good now, but eventually you will want a girlfriend.

Good Luck.
