Ok the iowa's i belive are now being retired so i don't think i can hope seeing a 21st battleship anymore, eh, so much for the large caliber guns able to level cities that no other ship can using convential weapons.....it's sad to see them go and see them get replaced a by a crappy destroyer that probabley won't even be able to take a single hit from a harpoon, strangley enough, why not have both but it is....sad and stupid at the same time, I thought i would never see it happen, a destroyer replacing a battlehip.........

But if there is hope for a 21st century BB, make sure it does not have the following.

1.Nuclear power (since BB's are designed to get hit and may cause leakage in the reactor.)

2. Less then the amount of armor deployed on the iowa's so they can take hits from anything more better.

3. A FCS better than the current iowa's had.

And if there is a few things to add on the 21st century battleships, add the following.

1.ramjet/scramjet rounds so they can fire 100+ miles inland.

2. GPS automatic targeting system and manual and maybe with positioning from a possible pioneer.

3. 10+ phalanx systems so that they cannot be blamed for having low anti-air warfare.

4. a possible Armored Aegis System if possible.

5. Ram accelorator to make guns to go farther of range, or the electromagnetic rail gun system.

6. Anti-air computer fused projectiles for the main guns, because with a ramjet/scramjet projectile it could take out a ballistic missile or even a large group of jets approaching it.

7. able to achieve 35+ knots.

8. at least 9 main guns or more.

9.a lower manpower to about 600-1200 people.

10. and a PBXN-5 warhead on the projectiles if not a stronger warhead.

11. if laser technology becomes better in the future put them on.

and umm....tomahawks aren't that strong honestly it's only a 1000lb warhead at the cost of 2 million dollars, only thing that makes it expensive is it's range basically which can be intercepted by aircraft even phalanx systems or missiles.

i think i may be relating to possible montana class BB's.......if it's possible to accomplish thier blueprints of yesterday and refix them to modern day warfare.

It's sad, but warfare has changed. A destroyer with a load of Tomahawks can probably do more damage than any battleship ever thought of doing with 16 inchers. A battleship is also a much better target for the plethora of anti-ship missile on the market today, whereas a destroyer is a much more smaller and mobile target to hit.

There is nothing like the sound of a 16 inch projectile, roughly the weight of a VW beetle, flying over your head though.

Iowa Class Battleship has been retired, highly unlikely to ever return to service. The DDX project is being projected as not only the next class of Destroyer, but also going to replace the cruiser as well. The future of surface combat vessel is very much in question, the current submarine force and the future DDX class of destroyers will be able to perform nearly all the missions that had once required cruisers, frigates and other high profile destroyers...

I served proudly aboard USS New Jersey in the mid '80s. Great ships, but with no modern air defense capability. Plus, modern cruisers and destroyers can carry 60 plus Tomahawks. The BB's only carried 16 in the obsolete armored box launchers. I truly loved firing the 16 inchers, but sadly, their day is done. Also, all the Iowas were decommisioned many years ago.
