As an atheist I can verify that I personally believe in many things, it's just none of them are supernatural beings and/or deities. So I am certainly not a non-believer. So what exactly is this non-believer we hear so much about in R&S?

I believe I like this question.

Non-believer is code for "person who doesn't worship the same exact sky god I do and feel the same way about the Rapture, Apocolypse, skirt length and the volume at which Jars of Clay cds should be played."

That would be me. I'm a skeptic and cynic. I don't believe in anything. There are things I know and things I don't know. Belief has nothing to do with it. I know there is absolutely no proof for the existence of any deity. I know that the process of evolution best explains the diversity of life on Earth. I don't know what women think but I know I like the way they smell right after a shower.

Wasn't this question asked before, but by a theist?

Anyway to believe in something you have to have a leap of faith. Something that atheist say that they cannot do. An atheist have to have things proven to them with cold hard facts and scientific explanations. If you believe in something you don't need those, you just know or come to a conclusion regardless of the facts.

Everyone or no one is a believer or anywhere in between. It all depends on the person speaking as to what they mean.

It depends on the context. Believer ofter references the scripture. This differentiates between people who affirm that they follow tradition rather than scripture, and people who choose to follow scripture.

A "non-believer" is anyone who doesn't accept the dogma and mythology of the person asking the question as literally true.

(I believe in many things. Just not in gods.)

Its a derogatory term created to indicate that we have no reason for living.

I don't mind being called names by people who think eternal torture is ok.
