I will be in the ROTC program at my college when i return from BCT this summer. I scored an 80 on the ASVAB and would love to earn the right to try Ranger school.

The main reason i want to know about promotion time is because i have yet to decide if i am going active duty or national guard, so if someone knows the time frame for both areas of service that would be very helpful.

first, i would like to thank anyone who took the time to give me a helpful answer and chose not to waste space.

second, if i go active is there any base in particular i would end up stationed at, how would i be spending my days, and how much time would i have for family? i ask because my home state is indiana (fort wayne) and has a pretty good record of putting funds into the guard, and treating the soldiers well

If your going officer the MOS is acually called 11A or 11O I think, I forget. But either way going up in rank as commisioned officer is a slow process. You have to be outstanding as it is because your an officer & on top of that you have too be even better to get promoted. As for ranger school, its pretty much mandatory anyaways if your an officer let alone a infantry officer. Going up in rank can go as fast as you can make it or go as slow as you make it. Just do your best & shine in a good way & you will rank up fast.

The ASVAB shows very little about your potential at a leader. You'll likely be sent to Ranger if you get selected for the infantry and there's an opening.

Assuming that you perform well in your assignments (especially platoon leader and company commander), do well in your service schooling, and demonstrate that you have the potential for strong performance at higher levels, you can expect to see major between 7-10 years after being commissioned on active duty. In the Guard/Reserve, it is roughly in the 8-11 year frame. Many things can effect this, including overall promotion rates, 'needs of the service', budgeting concerns, etc. My advice is to do your best, try for active duty upon commissioning (easier to go active then join the Guard than the other way around), and make the best of whatever you ultimately get. Don't get too set on any one branch ahead of time; while you'll get to indicate your preference, you'll ultimately get assigned where the service wants you.

In any event, good luck to you.

well first the benefits are better in the active army.... secondly how fast you are promoted depends on you and what you are doing to get promotion points.... and how well you do when you go in front of the promotion board....
my husband has a captain that is in his mid to late 20s and then we know a ssg that has been in the army for 20 years.... it all really depends on you and what kinda promotions are in your unit you are assigned too....

hope this helps alil bit

It can done overnight if you know the right people. In fact you can start out a full colonel if they want you to be one! Network with people until you understand things more and you can be what ever you want to be! If you survive being 11B and Ranger no one in civilian life will want anything to do with you because they know you haven't any common sense about you!

11B is an enlisted MOS classification, so you would never make 2LT, let alone MAJ.
