I really hope it's a lot. If they're that obnoxious in real life...

I have yet to see the animosity. I've worked both sides of the fence and with several Federal LE agencies. Like CSI, they blow stuff up to sell a show.

Chief Daryl Gates of the Los Angeles Police Department refused to turn over control of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles to the FBI. The FBI was so adamant about this Gates was forced to meet with the President. He told the President that if the FBI wanted to be in charge of the Olympic Games, then the LAPD would gladly step down, and let the FBI hand ALL the security. Chief Gates got his way. The LAPD was in charge.

Supposedly, the biggest animosity between FBI and Local Police is between the FBI and various tribal police departments. Native Americans have their own way of doing things, which the FBI usually do not respect.

My uncle, a LAPD officer used to refer to the FBI as the F***ing Bunch of Idiots.

Usually, when there are severe civil rights abuses in the LAPD, the FBI investigates. Where the FBI has found wrongdoing, and the LAPD has been embarassed, the LAPD has not really appreciated the FBI very much.

Government, whether it is local, state or federal share very little information. This is one reason why our criminal justice system is "fractured". In fact, having formerly worked for DHS, even government agencies rarely share information. This kind of attitude is really a "thorn in the foot" of investigators in criminal justice investigations. The CIA very rarely shares its information with any other government agency and that fact alone makes it nearly impossible to know all the facts one needs in order to solve cases. It is a bad situation but it is supposed to be getting better, but don't count on it!

You have to remember police/drama shows are "sensationalized" for the ability to draw viewers.

I've been in law enforcement for over 30 years and always had extremely good relations with outside agencies.

"Animosity" occurs when you are dealing with the younger newer officers or agents who lack tact and diplomacy skills.

You pretty much answered your own question.

Law enforcement agencies share the same goal, and work quite well together in real life.
