We've been invited to four Christmas parties this year where Santa will be attending as well as going to see him at the mall. I'm getting tired of him! LOL! Anyway, is it just here or is it the 'new ' thing to have to bring a 'wrapped' gift from Santa? Every party we go to [even the mall] Santa gives out a gift. So, that means we've already had to give our son three Christmas presents. Is it just me or is this just fueling materialism? Growing up, when I went to see Santa we'd sit on his lap, take a picture, tell him what we wanted for Christmas, and go home. There were no gifts! Uggh. I'm so sick of it already and to think I'm having another one.
So, it is just something that happens here or is it changing every where? What do you think about it?
Please don't think I'm a Grinch. Trust me, I'm as festive as the next person. I just hate that Christmas these days is ONLY about gifts.

Also, we are about to go to another party here in an hour. Would it be wrong if I just didn't bring my son [two years old] a gift?

LOL! No, we aren't just taking him to the mall. The Christmas parties we have been invited to are; my husband's work Christmas party, another party at my husband's squadron just for the children [Santa came in one a C130 Gunship...], my son's playgroup Christmas party, and another big one at a friends house. If we would have known that all would require wrapped gifts from Santa we wouldn't have paid, RSVPed, or gone to the mall in the begining of the month to see Santa!

teffieg--We have plenty of money so that isn't the problem. Maybe I'm just stuck in my ways but Christmas day comes once a year. It doesn't start December 1st and end January 1st. It's not supposed to last an entire month. Regardless, the meaning of Christmas isn't about gifts. It's about celebrating the birth of Christ and coming together as a community. That's the way I see it. By bringing my child all these gifts, by making a trip to see Santa something of materialism, and just making the entire season about gifts just doesn’t settle right with me. Next year, I'll make more suggestions NOT to require gifts at these parties. I think it's absolutely ridiculous!

Yes it would be wrong not to bring him a gift if all the other kids are getting one. Imagine watching all the other kids, hearing your name, and not getting a present, Heartbreaking! That said, you don't have to buy an elaborate or expensive gift. What about a little car, some stickers, or a picture frame to put a picture of santa in? The dollar store can provide a small gift that isn't going to break the bank.
I haven't heard of this where we live. My work provides a gift from Santa at our Christmas party, and the mall Santa gives out a candy cane. If this is a new trend, my sentiments lie with you.

I don't think it's right for you to have to bring a wrapped gift from Santa at any function. I've never seen this happen anywhere, at the mall or parties.
The Santa that my kids normally see give them a small stocking, a candy cane. The parents never have had to give Santa a gift for them to give to the kids.
Also, we attend our township Christmas party every year. They actually give every child that shows up a gift, the township purchases the items.
I don't think that you are a Grinch, trust me. :) I totally understand your feelings. What kind of Santas do you have where you live? LOL!
... Don't go to the parties. I really have never EVER heard of this before. The Santa should have stockings filled with little goodies, such as a candy cane, coloring book... etc... NOT expect the parents to bring their childrens' gifts to the parties to be passed out by Santa.

I totally agree. It is way too commercialized. Also, Christmas is the day for exchanging gifts, not everytime u see santa. take a stance! And u are not a grinch, you are concerned about ur childs well being and emotional developement.

4 times in one year is a bit excessive and that is your fault! You said that even after seeing him 3 times you are still taking him to the mall to see santa! Why?
