It's not essential to the operation of Windows, but you do need it. You probably use Java everyday and don't even know it. Many programs require Java to run, like LimeWire or Azureus. When you browse the web, some of the coolest features of your favorite web pages use Java applets. I suggest you keep it.

JAVA is used to run programs and scripts that are build into some websites. If you do not have JAVA, most webistes which have just text and pictures will be fine. But those which offer interactive options, games, etc. will not work without Java.
If you want to uninstall Java, go in to the Control Panel, click on the Add or Remove Programs icon. Scroll through the list of installed software and find Java. Select it, and a "remove" button should appear. Remove it.

You can buy Java reference books to suit your needs. But i recommend you to borrow and read a 10th std. ICSE computer applications textbook and after that the ISC std.11 textbook. This much is more than enough if you want to get your fundamentals clear. Practice is the key to success

Do not do the following steps if you do not know enough background knowledge about using windows.
Run Java written application without install a JDK/JRE.
1 Install a JDK (un-check JRE) to a folder, e.g c:\JDK;
2 Backup the folder c:\JDK, e.g compress to a zip file, jdk.zip;
3 Uninstall the installed JDK from Contorl Panel->Add & Remove;
4 Unzip the jdk.zip to c:\JDK;
5 Add java.exe to path, win+break->advanced->Variable->System Variable->Path,
add a ";" and "c:\JDK\bin" at the end of path value.
6 Run Java application from console, e.g java.exe blahblahblah, or java.exe -jar blahblahblah.
--
Then you system support Java without install any Java.
