Generally, pick something that you feel strongly about, or perhaps support research of a disease that affects someone you care about. There might also be some local organizations that assist people where you live.
If you have time, you can request information that shows how much of the donations actually are used for research or for helping the people they are supposed to help. Some charities put far too much money toward salaries and other administrative costs.

Women's and homeless shelters in in dire need of donations. If you live in a large community or main city, you should have one or two.
Big charities like Red Cross, United Way, etc. get enough donations year round and are too "big business" to give most of the money to the charity. It mostly goes to the staff.

Salvation Army has so many varied ways of helping people that we feel like our money is going to a good cause when we donate to them.

I think the best charity is to give someone (esp. the poor or destitute by comforting them) your precious time. Because it is something that when utilised can never be regained and its better to use it in a positive sense then just wasting it.
