If neither army was supported by any other nation and there were no use of nuclear weapons I would have to say China. Reasons: China has double of the standing active military than India. China with 2,255,000 and India with 1,325,000 China's navy out shadows India by 5.31 to one. China's land based weaponry also beats India's 3:1 China's air force wins with a 2:1 ratio The scenario: The war begins and India heads to their mountains to hold the line. With the numbers against them that is all that they could do. They are outnumbered 2:1 at least in every category so their will be no chance for them to launch any successful attack. So while both armies are held up in the Himalayas both unable to move China's navy finally arrives south of India. Again outnumbered two to one and this time without any tactical advantage such as mountains they are wiped out. now India is forced to pull a large number of men out of the northern front to guard any naval invasion that China could send. Granted by now there will have been a complete draft of the nations. This gives China 609,273,077 troops and India 467,795,073 troops if every single male and female fit for military service was drafted. However these troops are all canon fodder. Their weapons will be the cast offs and likely won't have any armor that the regulars wear. Also looking back into all military conflicts of the world these men will be used for any assaults and will have a very very high mortality rate. Now as the war continues China will have mounted a naval assault taking the southern portion of India. This assault will be nothing like D day during world war 2. At that time the Germans had months and months to prepare building elaborate defenses. Those in India will not have this time also the topography of southern India is not mountainous but quite flat so defenses would simply be blasted by the navy of the Chinese. Now as the war progresses, and a long war it will be simply due to the number of men fighting, both sides are going to be running out of armaments and men. However China also holds the key here. China's military budget is $26,650,000,000 more dollars than India's. Also India has lost a portion of its productivity due to the loss of the southern part of the country. So now it is only a matter of time till the Himalayas are lost and China just pours into the country.

I think you better see the bigger picture. Should any one of the nuclear countries launch, all will. The few that have satellites will see the launch and will launch the missiles. It's the only way to get their missiles away before the other hits.

The point is you see the launch and don't really know where it's going at the time of launch. When the US, and USSR were the big boys everyone knew, and we played by the so called rules. This day and age there are on rules.

Pakistan would be obliterated from the face of the earth but half of India can survive. But a nuclear war in the Indian sub-continent will trigger a chain reaction that will ultimately end the world.

In nuclear war no country can win. Although they manage to win against that country they will face a great loss in economy and they cant recover back easily.

Strategically speaking Pakistan would have technical edge on Nuclear firepower over India. Pakistan has a military regime for so long time and so the defence of their country and offensive tactics have been given considerable importance as compared to India where democracy prevails. China the power house of Asia also plays a major role in the scenario if war breaks out.Due to fear of Chinese aggression India might not be able to retaliate any nuclear aggression by Pakistan utilising same means and tactics. china has grown its Arsenal with the cutting edge missile technology and weapon deployment systems, railway route to Tibet has made the Peoples Liberation Army-the largest army in the world great mobalisation edge over Indian frontiers.

I agree with baksco about the MAD part . while in nuclear wars there cannot be any winner , India may continue to survive as a functioning nation only on account of its size while pakistan might collapse .

Its Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD), that kept USA and USSR from using their nuclear arsenal against each other. Its good that both countries have nuclear weapons else there will not be a MAD.
So, relax there will not be a nuclear war. And if it happens then whole south asia will loose.
