In Judaism the sabbath (Hebrew, "rest") was a day of the week God set aside for the Jews to rest and worship.
Since Jesus was the Son of Man, he had authority to change the sabbath. He said, "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the sabbath" (Mark 2:27-28).
Christ explained that the sabbath can be altered by human need (such as the disciples' hunger), and that the Son of Man has the authority to alter it (as he did for the disciples).
In Colossians 2:14-16, Paul mentions the sabbath by name, stating that Christ has "canceled the bond which stood against us with its legal demands . . . Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a sabbath. These are only a shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ." Paul says the whole Jewish festal calendar, sabbath days included, is not binding on Christians.
Of course, the moral principles contained in the Old Testament law are still binding on us, including the moral principle behind the sabbath commandment. We should set aside sufficient time for worship and rest. We no longer have to do this on Saturday.
By requiring Sunday worship the Church is simply following the lead of the apostles. Sunday is the day the early Church met for worship. Even though the Old Testament sabbath had passed away, the early Church commemorated Christ's resurrection on Sunday, the first day of the week, because that was the day Christ arose (Mark 16:9, see also Mark 16:2 and Luke 24:1).
Christians worship on Sunday because that is what the apostles did since Christ, by his authority as the Son of Man, both had and used the power to change the sabbath.
Cheers,
Bruce

The Sabath is actually from sunset Friday until sunset Saturday. The first thing is the Jewish calender is Lunar and counts the day from sunset to sunset.
The next point is that Sunday was a Roman Solar thing and when the Christians took over the Roman Empire they shifted their Sabath to cover the Pagan holiday over. Doing so avoided making everybody confused about which was their day off from work, it also effectvely killed the pagan celebrations. It was also the case that the Julian Calender was Solar and counted the day from Sun up to Sun down (the Romans, very practical, figured night was for sleeping).
The modern way of counting from midnight was put in place by the astronomers of England (greenwich) and the midnight was chosen instead of noon mostly because they wanted to avoid the Dateline Problem. (at the dateline you can step from today into yesterday at midnight just by crossing the time zone line)
So it is because the Jews use a different calender than the Christians that they have a different Sabath day.
Witchie mentions the Easter/Resurrection story. That is the "official" Catholic explanation but it actually was developed after the observance of Sunday as the Holiday was in place.

We celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday (starting at sundown on Friday night) because G-d finished creation on the 6th day and rested the 7th. It is given to us in Genesis 2:1-3. For Jews, the Sabbath is the most important holy day. It is a covenant that we have with G-d. To honor that covenant, we obstain from certain activities and participate in relaxing, educational activities such as reading or spending time with family and friends. In Exodus 31:16-17 it says "And the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath throughout the generations for a perpetual covenant..." It is our promise to G-d as Jews.

- just to point out to those that said it that we don't have an 'old' testament, in fact - that's what Christians call the Tanakh, or Jewish bible. For us it's not 'old' in the sense that nothing 'new' has ever replaced it, nor can it.
Jesus would also have celebrated shabbat, Friday sundown until Saturday sundown, because he was a practising Jew and he never, ever knew or followed any faith other than Judaism.
Jesus never said nor implied that the ETERNAL covenant with the Jews should be replaced, or set aside. Thus the only people now following the same religion as Jesus, are the Jews.
The NT, and all the remarks attributed to Jesus that appear in it, was written decades AFTER the Romans killed Jesus. And it was written by men who never even met him!

Sunday was when Jesus was resurrected. (Having died on Friday, dead for Saturday and raised on the third day, Sunday.) Before that, Saturday was the only Sabbath. After that, Sunday became the de-facto Sabbath in order to honor the ressurection.
Saturday is still the original Sabbath (as many roman languages will tell you, i.e Spanish and Sabado.)

I don't know about the Christians, but the Jews celebrate it on Saturday, because according to the Bible, He finished creating the world on Friday, and then he had Saturday to rest.

Christians do not celebrate the sabbath on Sunday.
Some Christians "celebrate" Sunday out of ignorance.
Some "Christians" celebrate the sabbath, also out of ignorance.

The Sabbath is observed by all of Christendom...we are spiritually grafted to the tree of Abraham by the blood of Jesus so we are all spiritually Israel / Jewish / children of Abraham.
In the reading of the old testament and the new testament people forget that it is ONE BOOK not 2 separate books, and the many messages are interrelated. They forget or do not understand the culture during the time frame and the meaning of the application.
this misunderstanding has lead to the Sunday business that is traditions of man and not part of the Bible....
