protestants: why are you so called?

Protestants are people or groups who broke away from the Catholic Church during the renaissance period. Many questioned the doctrines and traditions of the Church. Some separated because of corruption within the Church real or percieved. One thing is constant, protestants protest the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church was started by Jesus Himself entrusted to Peter. "You are Peter, the rock on which I will build my Church"--Jesus of Nazareth Please note it says Church not churches. While there was and still is corruption in the Catholic Church, it has survived for over 2000 yrs. Catholics still make up the largest number of Christians. And the Catholic Church still observes all doctrines set by Christ Himself over 2000 yrs ago.

I am a member of a Baptist church which is not protesant but the name "protestant" comes from the movement of protest against the Roman Catholic church's doctrinal positions. The Protestant Reformation began when Martin Luther posted his 99 theses on the door of the church at Wormes.

I think it came from "protesting" the indulgences that were being sold by the Church long ago.

And I think it was also "protesting" the idea that only church officials were allowed to interpret the Bible. In other words, portesing abuses of the Middle Ages Chruch.

The name refers back to the origin of the first Protestants, who "protested" against what they believed to be false teachings, practies and authority within the Catholic church. Their protest eventually lead to a split in the Catholic church.

The catholic religion gave that name to anyone who took issue with their tradition. Really only those denominations that came out of the reformation movement are actually Protestant. It means they "protested" Holy Mama Church.
