I have a question.....Why do more & more parents pick the day that their children are going to be born?

I mean I understand inducing past a due date, but when I see posts about people inducing before a wedding or so the birthday would be no where too close to a holiday....that bugs me.

That to me is making it a convenience to you....It just seems a bit wrong to plan your childs' birth like that.

I DO understand the medical need to, like a c section or WAY past due date....but if you can, why not just wait....there are few surprises in life.....

I dunno, it just seems a bit strange to me.....

Not only is it strange but it can be dangerous for the babies. Many doctors allow it and many even schedule births around their schedules. As a nurse I can say it's best to let the baby come when it's ready if there is no medical reason to take the baby early.

I induced 1 of my kids, on my Aunt's birthday. My midwife was going to be out of town for about 2 weeks and I REALLY wanted her to deliver my child. My first 2 kids came when they came. I still feel guilty about "picking" my youngest's birthday. My 4th child will definately comes when it comes.

Sometimes induction does make sense though. Part of the reason I did it was because my Mom came down to help and she had a limited time to be there. I wanted her watching my kids while I was in the hospital, not some stranger.

As for a holiday, if it was Christmas, I'd induce early or hold the kid in late. My eldest thankfully waited till January to come out (due the end of December). I'm a December baby and I hate how close Christmas is to my birthday. My grandparents would give me a join gift for birthday/Christmas, never seperate items. There wasn't extra money that time of year for a party (too close to Christmas!). And my siblings has birthdays spread through the year. 1 month and I'm done for the year. It sucked, still does.

First of all, realize that it is a very few (in the course of millions of births) who want to do this. In many cases, their doctors won't accommodate them.

I have a friend/acquaintance who wanted to be delivered this week instead of next week (she is having a scheduled section). That is because she won't have any help after New Years at all. She is 38 weeks a week from today. She is scheduled for a c-section on Thursday. Would I have done this? No. But her request was also viewed as reasonable by her doctor as well as one of his colleagues given the staff shortages that often occur just prior and during holidays. (edited to add: hospital normally schedules repeat c-sections at 38-39 weeks).

If you are already going to have an induction or c-section, keep in mind that typically those births don't occur on the weekend. Is that a problem for you too?

I would pick 3-18-09. All of these numbers can be divided by 3, and being the 3rd child it seems to the be the date I would pick. 3 divided by 3 is 1 18 divided by 3 is 6 9 divided by 3 is 3

I agree, it does seem strange to me, too. I had discussed with my doctor about inducing if I went past my due date, but that was just to plan in case it happened. As it was, I gave birth three weeks early, so no amount of planning could have prepared me for that!

I don't get it either! My oldest was born on Labor Day (I thought that was very appropriate). My middle child was a 9-11-01 baby. It's a sad day for most but a happy one for me. Now she always has something good to say about 9-11 at school each year. Who cares if kids are born on holidays. It is the thrill of the surprise for me I guess.

Yes, it's funny. Why can't one wait for the natural course of such an event? I am for natural birth on any day , if otherwise not constrained by any complications.

I picked March 1 (thought it was gonna be a boy) and I really liked the birthstone for March better than Feb. so I had HER born by c section on March 1.

Picking a birthdate is incidental. The fun is picking a conception date!
