IMO everyone should learn with a completely manual 35mm film camera with a 50mm f1.7 lens. Most introductory photography courses require this type camera. The Pentax K1000 is widely regarded as the best student camera and you can find several on ebay. Make sure the Owner's Manual is included. Also, if you buy a few lenses for your K1000 and later move to a DSLR, the Pentax DSLR line accepts every K-mount lens made since 1975.

Using a 35mm camera will teach you about f-stops, shutter speeds, ISO, composition and lighting. Since there is a monetary cost involved, you'll quickly learn to be more selective before releasing the shutter. You'll learn to slow down and actually think about the scene, its composition, the lighting - everything.

An excellent book, IMO, is "Object & Image: An Introduction To Photography, Third Edition" by George M. Craven.

Since i don't know where you live, I can't answer of where locally.

There are plenty of online resources for learning photography.

www.luminous-landscape.com
www.apogeephoto.com
www.nikonians.org
www.nikongear.com
www.photozo.com

To start with, any camera that has an aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual mode should be a good start.

Once you are sure this is something you want to progress in ,then look at entry level DSLRs like the Mikon D40/D40x/D80, Canon Digital Rebel XTi(400D) or Pentax K100D/K10D.

photography is 10% technical ability and 99% creativity.

once you master the controls, and learn about exposure and depth of field calculations, then you put frames thru the camera... and you look at other peoples work for inspiration and ideas.

ive been doing this for 35yrs, theres no shortcuts, but you can learn (mainly by your mistakes!) these days theres no film costs involved.

its all about observation, and actually seeing what youre looking at. and understandiing the nature of light. (and dark)

theres millions of cameras, look to spend around £350 for something half decent, which wont break, and will do more than you are likely to ask of it. personally im an olympus person. the E series are incredible tools, and the metering system runs rings around nikon and cannon...

good luck... and if you want to be a pro, get educated and learn your trade as an assistant.

The camera that I started with was a Fujifilm s700. It's pretty good, but I upgraded because I couldn't change the lens.

canon D5 - full frame camera - costly too. But i think 6D might be coming soon.
