Im currently a PFC, im in iraq right now and will be until dec 2008. my ets is not until april 2010. I wont be able for a waiver for e4 until may 08, my 2 year is in nov of 08. So heres my dilemma. Im an 11 Bravo and i am wanting to reenlist, but all i care about is getting ft sam houston as my duty station. i realize there is no infantry there, so my question is, when is my window to reenlist? is it possible for them to pick an mos for me (or give me the choice) and give me ft sam? or can they send an 11 B there and have me tasked out to do something else once i get there? lastly is there a way to get it in my contract to make it a permanent duty station? i could care less about the sign on bonus. Unfortunately i have not had time to talk to the re-up NCO, so any information would be appreciated

you have a choice: get in writing ability to reclass, or get duty station. you can't have both. if there are no 11Bs at FSH, you won't be going there if you stay 11b. if you reclass, there is no promise that you will be able to go to FSH.

regardless, you will NOT be able to get in writing that you stay at FSH permanently. you could try at each term to negotiate orders to stay, but at some point you will be shooting yourself in the foot, esp. if you want to make it a career.

As an infantryman, you cannot go to where there are not infantry slots. You can reclassify, but that eliminates your duty station of choice option. The closest you can get to Ft Sam is Ft Hood (I think). Your reenlistment window opens two years before your ETS date, but they won't give you many options until 1 year before your ETS date.

Oh, I guess you could try to work at MEPs or be a recruiter in San Antonio. Both of these would require you to be an NCO.

your re-up date is 24 months before your ETS most reenlistment NCOs will tell you to wait till 12 months prior because you'll have more options at that point. You can request a change of MOS and hope that it's one that will let you go to Ft. Sam. If they don't have anywhere to put an 11 B at Ft. Sam there is no way they can let you re-up to go there as an 11 B. you will never get it in your contract that you will stay at any one place more than a regular tour.

ok if i am not mistaken you have your choice of duty station when you reenlist....but i dont think that you can change your mos and get your choice of duty station.... and yes it is a option to get a permanent duty station..... my hubby is in the process of reenlisting and he is making where we are at our permanent station....
what you really need to do is make time to go talk to your reenlistment nco.... they are going to be the ones that tell you exactly what your options are.... and if ft sam is an option for you along with a change of mos.... just depends really.....

sorry i couldnt be more help

Check it out who wouldn't want to go there as a duty station? So first off it's gonna be hard to do. I actually don't think it is going to happen because even if you reclass there is no guarntee that you can stay there. Ft Hood like someone said is near there, stay away from Ft. Bliss cause that is the SGM academy so unless you want to be around all that rank go ahead. But you would definitely have to reclass to even go there, but the only way to find out is talking to the retention NCO. Good luck, I wouldn't mind going there specially for finance (thats what I am).

I think you can reenlist up to a year out from the end of your contract - I think - not 100% positive. Talk to one of the career counselors provided.

See your platoon sergeant and request to see the unit career counselor and talk to him/her about
your plans on reenlisting and where you would like to go and I am pretty sure that they can help you!
