Is it just the first shot taken from, say, a sniper rifle? And why is it supposedly so impressive to pull off a long range "cold bore" shot?

A cold bore shot is the first shot, with a clean barrel that will hit different than a dirty barrel. After the first shot there is some fouling in the barrel that will change point of impact.
So if you sight your gun in by the time you have it adjusted to where you want to hit, the gun is sighted in for a dirty barrel. So after you clean it the point of impact will not be the same with the clean barrel at long range.

Watching shooter are we? Either way. Everyone is right. Clean barrels shoot way different that when you get a few shots in on the gun. That's why snipers have a log book of every shot their rifle has ever taken that way they can anticipate how the rifle shoots cold bore verses with carbon build up. Good question though.

A cold bore shot is the most difficult to make because you are not able to make any adjustments. After that first shot you can make adjustments for wind and elevation.

Its the first shot fired from the rifle, however point of impact will change very little if any on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.*
