Oh dear it seems my question has upset ykphil. I wonder why? Don't you think that travel and history are inextricably linked dear phil ? Or do you believe that one should travel to different countries to experience different cultures in complete ignorance of their history?
As for your rant about this being the travel section I would just say that if you think that questions of a non travel nature should not be here why do you answer so many non travel related questions? For example : - Mao Zedong and Shi Huangdi? or Clubs v Malls? I dont think these or many other questions you have answered with your rather dubious knowledge of China, have much relevance to travel either.
Is it because you do not like the truths I tell about China?
As a person that only visits China for brief holidays I would suggest you have very little experience of the reality there. After all, living in and holidaying in a country are a completely different experience.Wouldn't you agree?

In your profile you say you cannot stand religious intolerance,racism, bigotry, homophobia, complacency and ignorance but then you say I love China ! Thats just a little contradictory don't you think? As all of these things exist in huge quantities in the country you purport to love. I find that a very strange attitude.

Why is my question stupid ykphil? Would it be stupid if I had asked the same about Hitler, Stalin or Pol Pot etc? Or is it because I have had the audacity to ask an awkward question about the country you think you love?
You go on to infer that I am a racist. How many racists do you know that are married to people of a different ethnic background?
I'm glad you were not upset about my question but having responded with the phrase "....GET THE F?%$# OUT OF OUR ( ? ) TRAVEL SECTION....." I just wonder what you would have written if you had been upset !
As for your sneering remark about me being an " expert " I will just say that I have never claimed ( nor considered myself ) to be one, but would claim that I have just a little more experience of China than somebody that that take occasional holidays there . Wouldn't you agree?
You go on to say I create conflict rather than understanding.

Would you be so kind as to tell me how YOU promote understanding of a man that was responsible for the deaths of MILLIONS of his own people?
As for the anonymity of my questions and answers isn't that the perogative of every person that uses this board? Do you believe that EVERY person that chooses this option has something to hide?
" our lives should be dedicated to something more positive" is another of the phrases you use. Do you consider it " positive" NOT to face up to and admit the truth about History ? Or would you rather look the other way, pretend it didn't happen and not talk about it?
You seem to want me to post my questions in another section, Why? Are you afraid that I might upset some Chinese people?
You seem,to me, to be at best naive or ignorant about the reality of China or worse in complete denial. In your defence I would say that this is not unusual for a person that has only had a minute amount of experience of a situation.

Have you ever talked to Chinese people that have been in Laogai? Or Mental instituions ( because they had broken no law but had said something that upset an "important person" )
Have you talked to students who have been expelled from their Uni. because they wrote anti corruption essays? ( it happened to 4 of mine ) Have you had conversations with members of Fallun Gong who have been tortured for their beliefs? Have you seen their scars dear ykphil?.... I guess not.
Next week it will be Christmas. If you sit down for a nice festive meal spare a thaught for those innocent people languishing in labour camps, political prisons and mental institutions being subjected to mental, physical and sexual abuse. ONE OF THEM IS MY WIFE.
I hope you can meet her one day!

there were millions, not just ones that were murdered but ones that died from starvation and disease and so on, I have heard counts as high as 72 million, but don't forget there had been killings and murders and famine going on in China long before Mao came on the scene

Well, for a quuick answer - there was the 'Great Leap Forward' that resulted in the worst famine in history with around 30 Million deaths (people were sent to prison for life when caught eating the bark off the trees)
then there was the Cultural Revolution that killed millions, ruined 60 or 70% of Chinese artifacts, historical sites and temples, plus led to the destroyed lives of an entire generation...
You should read Wild Swans to get a perspective from a Chinese who lived through some of that....

ykphil you are absolutely right. This bkk had been spreading hate msg on this channel for so long, i have been reading his negative comment/answer/question all through these few months. People, if you had read all his answers and questions you will realise, he's here only for one reason. to spread hate.
all that you have mentioned in your hate speech, we know. The killing of chairman Mao is history. same to a lot of other european countries or US as well, it is not that only China had history like these.
bkk, now that i know why you hate china so much. I feel sorry for you. but by posting your hatred on yahoo, do you seriously think you can change anything? No.
I agree, China has it's bad, but we love China nevertheless, because the beautiful aspect of China is of plenty too. It allured me to stay here for so long. We will not be shaken to not love China by you. And you'll gain nothing out of this except even more hatred and anger in you that will consume you eventually.

During the "Great Leap Forward" from 1958 to 1960, it is said more than 20 million were killed or starved to death.
During the "Cultural Revolution" (60's to 70's), 10 million in total died.
Also check "Hundred Flowers Campaign".

I am sick and tired of bigots, idiots, and others from the same lot who use this section of the YA (CHINA TRAVEL- Yes, TRAVEL) to promote their personal hatred and bigot views about one thing or another.
I love traveling, and I love China. This section is where questions about travel in China should be posed.
I also love history, controversy and debate. BUT NOT HERE IN THIS SECTION, FOR F?%$'S SAKE!!! GET THE F?%$# OUT OF OUR TRAVEL SECTION...
Your question, like many other stupid ones and other racist, bigot, homophobic, ethnocentrist comments on this forum, does not upset me. I rarely get upset. Wow, you spent 2 miserable long years in China and now you are the expert, like many so-called foreign "experts". Congratulations. I'm here to provide useful travel comments and recommendations on travel, and hopefully to bring people closer together in the virtual world. You, on the other hand, are here for another reason. You are contemptuous and people like you create conflict rather than understanding. Sad. The cover of anonymity is great for people like you. Even your Q&As are private...What are you ashame of? Our lives should be dedicated to something more positive. You should try it, you may get a kick out of it...
Oh yeah, there are sections on Politics, History, Economics, Religion and Spirituality, etc. If you want to debate controversial issues, why don't you post in those sections and I'll be glad to engage in a debate there?
Well, since the debate is here, might as well continue...If you read my answers throughout this forum, you would have noticed that my views on the issues you talk about are not in disagreement with yours. Indeed, I do not disagree with you on most of your points. My experience living in the Arctic for 25 years is very similar to yours in China. The difference is how you bring the message across. Confrontation, which is your weapon of choice, leads to more confrontation and hostility. Diplomacy, on the other hand, can lead to subtle but more consistent results. It is not hypocrisy or naivety, but it is certainly not complacency. I don't excuse anyone who has killed millions of people, or killed "only" one person for that matter. But I believe that most of us can do horrible things to others, I believe most of us -myself included- can kill, rape, murder, hurt, torture, when placed in the "right" circumstances and position. I also believe that we can and must find in ourselves ways to detach ourselves from negative emotions and instead have positive impacts on those we met and interact with by using compassion, empathy and understanding as the weapon of choice. Call me naive if you want. I take it as a compliment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From 1949 to 1976, there were millions got killed.
You may go ahead to ask more questions about how bad China was or still is.
The fact is, I still will not change my feeling to my home country.
