Gaudete Meaning

The Jews had long anticipated the coming of the Messiah. They did not have the privilege of knowing that He was just days away. Had they known, there would have been celebrations, like none ever seen before. Anytime a ruler or person of great position was to enter a city, they were honored by a celebration.

Gaudete Sunday is the day that celebrates the coming of the Savior, belated though it may be. It is a day of rejoicing in anticipation of the birth of the child of God, who has come to take away the sin of the world.

Gaudete Sunday is a Sunday of joy in that the coming of Christ is so near. This applies not only to the feast of Christmas but also to the second coming of Christ.

Many times, there is anxiety associated with waiting. Gaudete Sunday remins us that there should be joy in our waiting for the coming of Jesus Christ

Thank you for asking this question. I am not sure that non-Catholics understand this aspect of Advent
