Nobody is knocking the older guys, but the asker of the question does bring up a valid point. What older driver besides Mark Martin and Jeff B peformed well last year? The only other driver who could be considered "older" is Jeff Burton....and he's only 40.
I think its a combination of competition, age, and equipment. The competition is very stiff these days, both with equipment and drivers. Age does play a factor, as time does take it's toll on reflexes.

The "older" guys have learned the truth about racing: to win the race you have to finish the race. Watch the "younger" guys lose their focus on the race when they lose their tempers. What good is speed if someone gets wrecked. Soft walls and safety equipment can not protect you from a driver that is out for revenge. How many of the 'younger' guys wreck each other.
Time and experience can be a powerful tool in any sport. Don't knock the 'older 'guys, we all can learn from them.

Both all athletes slow down even on eyesight-re action time and so on but the competition is young and eager--Most 35-40 year old Ball Players cant run and jump like the 21-25 year olds just out of College!!!!!

All of you, except for Bizz, fail to remember that Mark Martin finished in the top 25 and only ran half the races. If he ran like Gordon or Johnson he would have wrecked Harvick to win the daytona 500. The simple fact is that older drivers have respect for the other drivers. They want to win legitimately without cheating, "manipulating the fenders", or wrecking somebody.

I think its a combination of both and the fact that the older ones usually get shuffled to teams that are not as competitive for $$ reasons.

Most of the "older" guys aren't in very good equipment. I also think that they drive more cautiously because they've hit the wall a few more times than the younger drivers and therefore they are not as aggressive.

As you get older you don`t lose your ability to think as fast as the younger people, but you do lose the ability to react to a situation as fast as younger, plus what racefanvote has said the older one`s have bounced off the wall a few times..
and remember how bad it hurts ..
its better to finish the middle of the pack and drive home
than to win and have to be carried home,,,

Both the competition and them. When your bones get older they don't mend as fast when you hit the wall.

Some get slower, some get less bold, and some just have more competition.

Some of the new rookies, have no fear and just let it hang out until they crash. As we get older and do not heal as fast we tend to be somewhat more cautious, we know how much the cars cost to repair and time it takes to heal from our own wounds.
