So there's a 22 inch HDTV sitting on one table, and a 40 inch HDTV sitting on another table.
Why are people so drawn to the larger screen?
I personally find it over-whelming. I think it looks tacky when a TV is so big that it becomes the dominating focus of an entire living room.
Also, I find it easier to watch the smaller screen (especially in gaming). You can see everything on the screen at once pretty much, instead of having to look from one side of the 40 inch tv to the other just to take in the entire image.
Could someone please explain to me why these giant television screens are so appealing? I have a feeling it's a symptom of the greed we see today, with people wanting bigger cars and bigger buckets of junk food for no reason other than that they want "MORE MORE MORE!!".

Do you wear blinders when you go outside in order to limit visual information? I only ask because of your comment that you have to look "from one side...to the other." Peripheral vision should take care of that. Put another way, would you rather sit courtside or up in the nosebleeds and why? Most people would rather sit courtside so they can see more of what's happening and what they see is life sized. In the same way, no one wants to strain to look at a tiny little screen. One day, your image will occupy a wall. It creates a more immersive experience.

In most cases a 20", or in your case 22", TV is not big enough for most living/family rooms. If you sit a distance of 5-6.5 feet from where your TV is you should have around a 40" TV set. This is so your eyes don't strain. It may look HUGE close up, and you may think that it is going to be overpowering in your room, but, again, it depends on the room size. If you do what you should, and get a TV right for your room, then you won't have these issues.
I agree that us Americans are obsessed with our things, but for everyone saying that we want everything bigger, then why is it that our cell phones, and computers are getting smaller?

The rich love the big screen TV. It is an extension of their wealth. I hang them for a living, they are very cool, HD looks awesome, but a 60" TV can be a bit ridiculous.

You think just like me. Not speaking for everyone, but in America, we like big, we like our space, and most of all.. our money. I think these HUGE tvs, and HUGE cars are all ways to humbly show off our money, and "status."
Me on the other hand, I drive a smart car... you should check that out ( www.smartusa.com) I have a 20inch tube tv, and and I save my money.

Ever go to a movie theater? Most of us fell in love with movies in the theater so we are trying to re-create that experience in the comfort of our own home.
Bigger screens are more realistic and immersive. We are trying to put ourselves into the action with surround sound and larger displays.
We don't "MORE MORE" - but "REAL REAL".

I agree with you. Everything else is getting smaller and the TV's are getting bigger...makes no sense.
