Wet combing. Lots of conditioner. Every 3 days. For about 2 weeks. Only way to get rid of them. Chemicals don't work. And kill the eggs with malt vinegar left on overnight.

Yes, a thick coat of mayonnaise will do the trick. Coat all the hair and scalp with a thick layer of the stuff, wrap hair in Saran wrap or use a plastic shower cap. I'm not sure how long you should let sit, maybe a half hour to an hour. You'll have to shampoo hair several times to get all the mayonnaise and odor out. A plus is it's also a great conditioner!
Remember to use a lice comb to finish treatment, and wash all the bedding, towels, and coats, hats, etc. in the hottest water possible. Anything that can't be washed (stuffed toys, furniture, mattresses, etc) should be treated with commercial lice spray and/or sealed in a trash bag for two weeks. If you don't get them out of your home, you'll just get reinfested over and over again. Steam cleaning the carpet and upholstery is a very good idea if you have, or can rent or borrow a steam cleaner.
This isn't an easy problem to get rid of, but it is possible. You just have to be thorough in removing all lice and their eggs from yourself and everything you come into contact with (don't forget your car's upholstery, office chair, etc., for instance). All family members should be thoroughly checked, and treated at the same time, if necessary.

The best bet is to wash and condition the hair with tea tree shampoo and conditioner as head lice dont like the smell of this!! The key is them to comb....and comb....and comb!! The hair should be gone through with the headlice comb (these can be purchased cheaply from the chemist) once a day for the next three weeks!! Most people dont carry on this long...but that is why they get "reinfested" in fact...they never got rid of them!! They breed very quickly, so even if you dont see anything in the hair after a week of combing....carry on!! the Baby head lice are often too tiny to see, and the hair may still contain eggs. Conditioning before combing is often helpful, as his paralyses the headlice so they can be combed out.
If it is in a child...it would be wise to treat any other close children, eg siblings.

There are many tried and tested and have used them myself when girls were young:
1: conditioner lots of and then after comb
2: comb every single day and night to stop the bigger ones from laying eggs
3:cooking oil or mayo in hair over night then wash condition and comb
4:tea tree oil shampoo plus conditioner
5: A good comb and search picking the white eggs out takes ages but worth it.
6: go to chemist and find what is available now as they change it due to them building a resistance.
7: STEEL nit comb is best and lasts longer is also finer than plastic
8: teach them not to get to close at school
9: Wash pillow cases after all been treated
10: treat EVERYONE in house

Washing and combing is really the only effective method (and try to keep away from the source). Vinegar may help, but head lice are resistant little buggers and any "chemical" remedy (bought or home made) only tends to work for one or two applications before they become immune (or at least resistant).

Put a few drops of tea tree oil into just enough hair conditioner to cover the head. Rub into the hair and leave for 10 minutes then comb through with a nit comb. Repeat this process in 3 days.

well, the normal thing to do is to stop by the chemist/pharmacy and get some anti-lice shampoo, but that's not really a home remedy.

You could try the good old-fashioned bone-comb. That's so fine (and painful) that it can get them all, and their eggs, out.

If you shave your head and then smother it in vaseline or some other grease, that will indeed suffocate them. If you're planning to keep your hair, you might need to keep the vaseline on for a bit longer.

god people are such idiots about head lice, we've all had them!

anyways my sister always uses one of those nit combs (you can usually pick them up from the chemist) she puts condoned all the way through the hair, (doesn't have to any special stuff) then just keep combing, and combing till they come out, also if its the kids who have them i think its best to have a word with there friends parents so you can all do them on the same night so they don't pass them on again.

you could try tea tree oil i dont think they like it much but it smells nice also when you condition the hair after washing instead of rinseing it out leave it in then go through with a nit comb with the conditioner still on the little lodgers have no cling to them and slide through much easier so tea tree oil for over night or a good few hours then wash and condition search then rinse good luck
